BF Goodrich Tire Experience?
Today I replaced my OEM Good Year Eagle LS2 tires (P275/55R20) with BF Goodrich All Terran T/A KO2 (LT 275/55R20). Specs: Max Load 2680; Load Range D-8ply; max psi 65psi. We are 15 days into a 22 day trip to the Utah national parks and this was an unplanned but necessary purchase. Story to follow.

Good luck with those tires. I used to use them a lot but they got to where they were hit or miss; couldn't keep balanced, noise after 8-10k and just didn't make me happy. That's been a few years so hope they have upped their game and you have super luck.

The back story:
Arrived in Monticello UT yesterday. Campground owner told us of this great back road leading up to FAA towers with magnificent views. So after setting up the TT off we went. This was a 12 mile dirt-gravel-rock service road to the towers with an elevation gain of approx 4,300 ft to an elevation of 11,368 ft. On the way up I briefly thought about our P rated tires but the road was not terribly bad did not require 4 wheel drive so we continued on to the top. As advertised the views were outstanding! You guessed it, a quarter of the way down the road the front passenger side tire went flat, from 40psi to 0 in less than a minute! Two hours later after struggling with a crappy OEM bottle jack on a 3+% grade of gravel, dirt and rocks I finally got the flat off and the spare on. Good Sam Road side assistance was completely useless (another story).
Lesions Learned:
- Operate your emergency equipment (spare tire release, jack, etc) BEFORE you need it
- Check your OEM jack, do you think it is adequate? Ours is not for the situation we were in.
- Check your spare tire inflation regularly, ours was ok but under inflated
- What size is you spare, ours is a Good Year Wrangler but smaller size (265/70/R17). This surprised me.
- Do not rely on Good Sam service if you are in a remote location
- P rated tires are the the best for rocky, gravel surfaces on steep grade
Now I had a decision to make. Can the existing tire be fixed? If so will it be reliable? I do not what to finish our trip with at least another 600 miles of travel with no spare and an undersized right front tire. There are no national tire chain stores in Monticello UT. The closest is a Big O in Cortez CO about 65 miles away. We went to Big O after we called them and as I expected they declared the tire as unrepairable with sidewall damage. The only LT tires they had in stock in the size I needed were the BF Goodrich. After some quick internet research I made the decision to purchase. Big O service was good, in and out on a Saturday afternoon in less than 2 hours. Hopefully it was the right decision.

Error in back story above: should have said “P rated tires are NOT the best for rocky, gravel surfaces,
The good news is I had been thinking about upgrading to LT tires, but given I have only 18k miles on the OEM P rated tires I was stalling until next season.

Thanks sourdough,
I can definitely feel and hear the difference over the P rated Good Years. Stiffer ride and a bit more road noise but not terrible. I have not tows with them yet as we do not leave Canyon Lands until Tuesday.
I had the tire store inflate to 60psi, but I am wondering what the psi should be when home and not towing.

I think you did great. Caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place - btdt. Long story but lost a tire in the middle of nowhere mountains. Through a LOT of different gyrations finally made it to a tire store 70 miles out of the mountains and had to have a new set of tires installed (my estimation based on evaluations like you made). ALL they had were was a set of no name LT tires I could not begin to remember the name to, but they said they were good. It was Sunday, the dealer brought in his crew, they had to go get new lug bolts because 2 were sheared off...on Sunday. Super stellar folks taking care of someone in need...can't say enough. And....those no name tires? Ran like a charm until I got rid of the vehicle.
Those BFG tires are going to be fine and IMO you did the perfect thing trying to fix your situation. They will do you a fine job AND.....the only thing P tires are meant for is your Toyota Corolla going to the grocery store, not a truck.....
Edit: I did not see your last post. You have a 1/2 ton truck. LT tires fully inflated at 65psi empty is just needless harshness. I would run them at maybe 50psi. What was the max on the P tires...44psi? It depends on what you use the truck for daily but if just "putting around" doing misc. 65 (or 60) psi is too much.

Correct, 44psi and I was thinking the same, bring them down to around 50psi. The service techs at Big O recommend as low as 40psi but said to try different psi settings and see what “feels” best.

I wouldn't personally run that size tire at 40psi. Those guys are looking at the flex that a P tire offers, the LTs don't do that as much. 50 should be fine empty or with a small, moderate load. After that air up.

You picked a very good tire. I have those on two Jeeps I have and all of my mileage is on Blacktop roads.....Just keep them rotated about every 5-7k miles.....Mine ride excellent and no problem yet....and don't expect one.....

We have the BF KO's on our tow rig , and couldn't be happier . Just returned from a 1600 mile trip and had no issues (as expected with the BF KO's) . This trip was up and down the (crappy) Northeast highways up to Maine .
They may be (very) slightly louder than just a normal truck tire , but more than make up for it in traction, durability, reliability etc .
We even had to make a sudden emergency stop with trailer in tow, and the BF's stopped so well , if we were not wearing seat belts , we would have been on the winshield .
Cant say if they are worse for fuel milage (probably) , but we wouldn't be able to tell as our tow rig is a 2500 Suburban with an 8.1 ....... nothing helps, lol .

Thanks folks,
You are making me feel better about a quick, ‘just had to do it’ purchase, and validating it was a good decision. As an engineer I hate making purchases without doing the research. So far, only about 125 miles, I can live with a bit of added noise and a stiffer ride [at 60psi). I get to try out towing on the 475 mile return trip to Fort Collins Tuesday/Wednesday this week.

I wouldn't have a worry in the world about those tires. Owned several sets back when I thought I needed a more aggressive tread on my trucks and SUVs - never had a failure; BFG makes a good tire.

I had a set of TA KO's that I got over 80k out of on a 2-Door blazer. Always rotated them and kept them inflated properly.

IMHO, these are the best tires I've ever put on a truck. I absolutely love them.
I had them on Ram 2500 , and when I sold that truck, I bought a Ford F250. I replaced the Michelins on the Ford with the BF Goodrich. Both trucks pulled 30 ft 5th wheel campers. In my opinion, they gave the best of both worlds - aggressive enough to go off road, but quiet enough to pull on the hiway.
I give them a 10 out of 10.

Thanks Folks,
I appreciate all of the feedback!
Interesting side note. When we returned home I registered the tires with BFG. In so doing I noticed only three of the tires had date codes and one of the tires did not. I posted a question on the BFG customer service web site but I have not gotten a response.

According to published load inflation charts for your old “P” tires and new “LT” tires the minimum recommended inflation pressures for your new LT tires should be 55 PSI. Without knowing the actual recommendations shown on your vehicles certification label it’s really unknown.
The bottom line is; the new tires MUST have the capability to provide a load capacity equal to or greater than what the OE tires provided at vehicle manufacturer recommended levels. The PSI values shown on your vehicles’ certification label are minimum values.

BF Goodrich tires.
I highly recommend these tires.
Been using them for over 30 years.
Long wearing, tough, will go through about anything you come across.
Good traction in rain quiet (compared to other brands)
Can't go wrong.

My B F Goodrich experience is a little different. Our two new company trucks purchased in the late 80's came with B F Goodrich. No telling the model of the tire. Both sets were completely shot in less than 20K. I just stayed with Michelin from that time on. It appears that BFG has gotten their heads pulled out of their butt.

CW,
Thanks for the recommendation.
The vehicle certification label on the door post for the old P tires states pressures as 32 front/35 rear. I have all four of the new LT tires inflated to 53psi cold. I may increase them to 55psi next time I check them since we will not be towing again until next spring.
