Ground Control 3.0

So, I've read many threads on the various issues folks have re: their leveling systems. I'm not sure what to make of mine.

It err's out randomly and intermittently. It's never an out-of-stroke error. It can happen when I'm loading the trailer or unloading the trailer. I guess it's typically when I'm lowering the front jacks for either.

It will just say there was an error and I need to retract either:

  • all the jacks
  • left rear jack
  • right rear jack
  • rear jacks

Any of these are a possibility. It will tell me to press and hold "Retract" to retract all jacks. If I do that it will stop and give the same error. If I try to retract just the rear jacks it will sometimes stop (not always) and then tell me to retract either the left or right rear jack, even after they are fully retracted. I've also tried to manually retract the rear jacks until fully seated but will still receive a rear jack error.

I will then just level it manually and leave it alone. After several days or a week I'll retract all jacks and it will reset and Auto Level will work again. Then when I'm back to loading or unloading the trailer it will err out again and I start all over.

I always plug into shore power before operating the jacks. I've got 3 emails into Lippert with no response.

Any thoughts?

To rehome the jacks they need to be extended at least 6”. Then hit retract and they will ALL retract fully.

Check all connections from battery to front controller.

Really didn't want to read this. Just got my trailer back from the dealer. Had it several weeks moving among the bays etc. Went to hook it up to the truck and it did the same thing (RR jack error). Used it lots of times, no issues...no problems. Went and got the SM. Told him I thought for ONCE I was going to get out of here without something broken while it was here but.....and blamed it 100% on the yoyo's that mess with the trailer.

He looked at it, furrowed his brow and began manipulating the functions. I asked "what did they do to cause this"; he just shrugged and kept changing functions. I again asked "what is the solution"? He said they sometimes go off on a tangent, he just starts operating the control panel trying to correct what it says is the problem. He said it will stop shortly. It did in about 3 minutes. Worked fine loading up, when I got home and so far. I personally think it was something someone at the dealership, which has zero clue of what they're doing when operating it, did. We'll see.

Thanks, Chuckster. I have rehomed it before and it has reset to be fully functional. But then it will eventually err out again. I will check wires as suggested. Isn't there also a rear control board or do all connections come strait to the front controller? I'll have to look at their schematic again.

Sorry, Danny, I know we have the same system. Looks like they can be glitchy

GC 3.0 has a controller in the front compartment. The touch panel is usually on the side near the front and there is a rear sensor mounted to the cross member of the frame usually about 20-30” behind the rear axle. If it’s loose it can cause issues.

Ground Control 3 is SUPER sensitive to voltage and frequently will fault out for no apparent reason. I can't count the number of times mine faulted in the 6 years I owned it. But I can tell you without reservation that if the voltage drops below 12.5 volts it will usually fault. My solution was to always make sure that I was either plugged into shore power or the truck before using the GC3.
I will note that the issue was less frequent after I replaced the series 24 battery with a series 27.

Javi I think you are on point. Never had an issue but when they took it into the dealership, where they let it sit and run the batteries down to nothing (ruined 2 brand new ones in the past) I have no doubt your assessment is right.

I just rehomed the system again this morning and it's working correctly again. I have to assume that if I can rehome it that there is communication to all jacks.

I guess I'm wondering what to look for if it errs out again. If I'm connected to shore power, and if all of the connections appear to be sound, and I can't find any compromised wires then I'm not sure where the error occurs. The only part of the system I can't see is the rear sensor, which is under the coroplast.

You might want to take a look at the rear sensor.

Thanks, again, Chuckster. Aside from wires and connections is there anything I should be looking for? How often is the rear sensor faulty? Also, if the error is most often about the rear jacks, where does it determine whether or not the jacks are homed, extended (and how far), etc.?

I havent see to many rear sensors fail, Ive seen a few loose. Make sure its oriented correctly ( probably is) and the wires are plugged in firmly. After that I would CALL lippert tech support. They are great to work with

When I did the pdi for my trailer it was giving a error code.. I noticed the keyboard pad wasn’t seated fully in place as well like someone was messing with it.. when it came time for the tech to show me the level system he couldn’t get it to clear ...he tried a few things then just said “the hell with this” he went and grabbed another keyboard pad..plugged it in and voila..no error code and worked fine...I’ve thought about just buying a spare keypad just in case

Now that touch pad sure looks like something I might want in my Christmas stocking....or birthday box....or, for the heck of it!

Be sure to plug into shore power when operating. Battery alone may not be enough. This is the way the manufacturer recommends.

I’ve only used this system 4 times. The second time the right side jacks both “stroked out”. Kept telling me to manually retract. It ended up fixing itself. I will say that I’ve had great luck the last 2 times when I use the tongue jack to get the front to back as level as possible before trying to auto level. That and use leveling blocks when needed.

Manufacturers instructions say to always begin the autolevel process with a nose high position, not level.
