240V plugs

So I have a 240V outlet in my garage that is 4 conductor for my range/oven and my stick welder. I bought a 240V single phase welder that is 3 wire.

My thought is to use a range cord (4 conductor) and add a 3 wire receptacle to the other end..BOTH are 240V rated, But the question is can I do it and what wire do I "drop" at the receptacle.

I do have a 3 wire outlet for my dryer but its at the back end of the garage and I dont want to spend $$ making an extension cord when I already have the 4 wire 30 footer.

Do the right thing and install the appropriate dedicated RV receptacle. When attempting to Jerry-Rig 240 receptacles for RVs, you are looking at a disaster waiting to happen?

What is the welder rated for? Does it have a plug or is it hard wired?

Chuck,

Are you just trying to convert a 240 4-pin plug to a 240 3-pin plug without changing voltage across the plug pins?

If so, you might consider just buying one of these adapters: https://www.amazon.com/Electric-3-Pr...306393152&th=1

It costs around $20, but by the time you go to Lowe's, buy the plugs and the ROMEX to wire one yourseld, you'll probably spend more than it costs to just buy one.

Note the shape of the ground pin on the 3-pin end. It's not the same as an RV 3-pin plug, so make sure it's what you need for your new welder.

My HF welder came with this same adapter. I use it to plug my 3 pin welder cord into the 4 pin plug that I installed in the pole barn years ago.

Well it turns out the plug end on the welder is 20A so I need to order this adapter.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/AC-WORKS...631842#overlay

Had I known BEFORE I bought the welder, I think I may have reconsidered. It is subject to 20% restocking fee and I got 10% off the price.

Thanks for the responses. And an extra Thanks to Marshall

Thanks. Started with gas back in the 80’s, got my first wire feed in 2001, and a stick welder in about 2008. Wire feed started acting up last year and parts are no longer available.

I believe this question has been answered but just to confirm my understanding (4 wire conductor has two hot legs, a neutral and ground. 3 wire is two hot legs and one neutral.
) I decided to refresh my knowledge. I have set up my two welders but it has been 10 years. Here is a good video.

Are you asking a question? I'm not clear what it is.

check your local code and hire a license electrician

I fixed my problem with the purchase of an adapter made for 240V wire feed welder. This thread doesn’t need to continue so I will close it.
