Wheel capacity question

My 2020 Cougar 315 RLS has a 235/80/16E trail King tire on it which I'm going to replace with Maxxis 8008T tires. I really would like to go to a G rated tire but I have no Idea what the maximum PSI my wheel can handle. Any help would be appreciated

From what I've seen, the PSI rating is stamped on the inside of the rim. Why it is on the inside is beyond me. It would be much easier to find the rating if it were stamped on the outside for all to see.

Just my .02.

Take care!

I don’t really think you need G rated tires on a 12,390# GVWR 5er. Our 5er has a GVWR of -2,360# and it came from the factory with LT 235/85-16 E tires, yes less stated load capacity than a DT tire but higher speed rating. We have 12,168# total tire capacity of an axle weigh of just under 10,000#, I feel the tires are built to a higher standard than ST tires.

The first thing you'd need to do is make sure your wheels are up to the weight rating/tire pressure rating for the tires you want to install.

There are, at least 6 weight ratings for aluminum 16" trailer wheels.

The first determination is whether the wheels are 6 lug or 8 lug wheels.

All of the 6 lug aluminum wheels I've seen are either rated 3200 or 3400 pounds. Those weight ratings work out to an 80PSI pressure rating (certified wheels for E series load rated tires)

Most of the older 8 lug aluminum wheels are either rated 3960 or 4080 pounds with a max pressure of 95PSI which equates to wheels certified for load range F tires.

Some of the newer (in the past 10 or so years) aluminum wheels are rated for either 4080 or 4450 PSI. Some are rated at 110 PSI, some are rated at 135 PSI. All of those wheels, as far as I have seen, are 8 lug wheels. I've not seen any 6 lug 16" wheel rated to mount a Sailun 637 tire.

If I were a betting person, I'd bet that your trailer is equipped with 6 lug wheels, eliminating any hope of installing load range G tires and using them at their full capacity. I'd stick with your current wheels and step up in size to 235 85R16 LRE tires at 80PSI. They will "max out your wheels" without providing rubber you can't use.

Your Trailer King tires have a maximum load capacity of 3520#. The Maxxis tops out at 3420# and not qualified as replacements for the TKs.

All of the 16" LRG tires require special high load capacity wheels. Sailun puts that note right on their product sheet.
