Thanks for posting that…I was also looking online for a decent pic..I have a copy of Howard Chapelle’s book on boat building somewhere but can’t locate it right now..I will get around to fitting it eventually..the problem is that almost anyone can figure out how to cut the pieces if they have a little bit of woodworking knowledge …but fitting it properly and having all the side planks fit into it perfectly and still manage to keep the water out of the boat is a skill that boatbuilders spend decades perfecting and few people today even have the skill anymore.

This is a good video that shows why my stem failed…the stop waters failed and the stem rotted out …it’s a real art to boat construction

Thanks John. I Googled the heck out of it and didn't see anything I understood.

I know this thread has literally gone off the “deep end” lol. Also we carefully removed the pieces of the old stem and we’re going to use them as a pattern…it was all under a shed roof attached to my FIL’s shop…my MIL came behind to “straighten up” and promptly threw them away..that was at least 15 years ago..FIL was an excellent woodworker and did many repairs on his Chesapeake deadrise

race the cocktail class hydroplanes ..small little racers with little outboards for the sport of it.

And yes the boat I have for the little evinrude is a Carvel planked 8’ dinghy..I drove up to Newport Rhode Island with my FIL about 16 years ago to buy a boat engine for his boat..saw the dinghy at the boat yard and bought it…it is really nice and original but the stem board need to be replaced …( it’s an intricate 3 piece stem with all of the planks tied in) my fil was going to do it for me but passed away before he got a chance…I just have so many other projects it kinda too a back seat…
I went to the Facebook page and they have some great pics. A couple of the "Slippery Eel" racing in pretty close quarters.
