Want to upgrade our water pump

We need to replace our water pump. Fortunately, the water pump was the only thing damaged when our pipes froze over the weekend. Should we go with what was originally installed in our rig or is there a type that will pump more water per minute. Our current one pump a little over 3 gallons a minute. The original pump will cost about eighty dollars to replace. We are willing to go as high as $200.00 to replace it if it is worth it. If not we will replace with same as what froze up. Thanks

SHURflo and Flojet are the two main suppliers of pumps in both RV's and in boats. There are a variety of models within each manufacturer with varying gpm, amps required, etc. Some pumps are quieter than others - less vibration - but the amount of noise depends upon a number of factors such as how the pump is mounted, type of water lines, etc.

If the volume of water supplied by your present pump is sufficient, then you might want to look at something similar rather than upgrading. You might also want to look at installing an accumulator tank which will cut down on the amount of cyling the pump does. These are easy installs and don't cost that much but they will take up some additional space.

I'd visit the two websites and see what is available and compare to the one you are replacing.

I'm thinking I'm gonna go with an accumulator tank.

Something to consider with water pumps is the volume you need to pump. Most showers run about 1.5 - 2.5 GPM. In most of our rigs, if you are in the shower and someone turns on the water in the sink, you'll get a noticeable temperature change in the shower. Increasing the GMP at the pump may help reduce the temp change but it won't eliminate it. Most of us have learned that when someone is in the shower, you just don't turn on any other water.

Using an accumulator tank in the supply line will help stop the pump hammering or rapid cycling when the water is on at a trickle. That seems to be when we notice the pump noise most of all. The accumulator will almost stop all of that. It will also help smooth out the water pressure at the faucet.

Something to consider with your replacement water pump is that you have a limited supply in the fresh water tank. Increasing the flow by installing a larger pump will, if you have kids, most likely cause you to run out of water faster. Then again, if you camp with full hookups most of the time, the pump is seldom used, so it really doesn't matter.

Also, realize that just because a pump costs more doesn't mean it will be quieter. Some of the most expensive pumps are significantly louder than the medium sized pumps because they don't pump as much volume. Pump mounting and eliminating vibration in the supply lines is probably more important than price when trying to reduce noise.

If you're going to simply replace the pump with the same type, there shouldn't be much plumbing to change, but some pumps use a different type of mount fitting and depending on your plumbing, you might have to get into some complicated plumbing changes if the hoses are too short after changing out the fittings.

I'd say, if you're satisfied with what you have, there's not a lot to gain by changing the type of pump. If, however, you've had problems with your water supply when dry camping, maybe a change could help resolve the issues you've had.

Sorry to hear about your pump issues.

The pump in our old HTT failed, so after doing a good amount of research, I decided to go with the SHURflo Revolution. I was extremely happy with:
  1. Very quiet - just a very slight hum in the background, and much quieter than the original pump.
  2. Has a bypass, so the pump doesn't cycle (repeated on/off cycles) when the water demand isn't great enough to use the full 3GPM. It just runs until the demand is cut. From the research I did while looking for the replacement, it seems that cycling is much harder on pumps than just running.
  3. Reasonably priced. Only $76 on Amazon right now.
If you're happy with the amount of water you 3GPM pump provides, you'll almost certainly like this one.
