Water pump cycling

We live in NE FL so you wouldn't think we'd need to winterize. But this winter, in spite of the current balmy weather, has been a zinger. We went camping a few weeks ago (the weather had significantly improved over early January when I winterized) and the FW pump refused to cycle - it remained continuously on.

This wasn't a problem as the location we were going had city water. Today I decided to try to troubleshoot it. My concern was something cracked during the hard freeze, i.e., I didn't winterize (drain) it well enough.

As it turns out, the pump must have developed a vapor lock. Just running the pump normally would provide sufficient back pressure in that it would shut off after a few seconds (with no water running). When I finally decided to open a faucet to see if any water would come out - voila! - it cycled off. No more problem.

I don't know if anyone else has encountered this issue, but I thought I'd pass my experience along.

Most of the water pumps will self prime, but if you don't open a faucet in the system, there is no way water can reach the pump, so it will never develop enough pressure to turn off the pump. What you did is what is always necessary to allow a pump to move water through the system if all the water has been removed from the plumbing and the pump.
