Large window shade?

On our Bullet. We have the large rear window. The shade only goes up about ten inches. Is there a way to get it to open up further or do I need to replace with a different style shade?

Thanks

Depends on the brand of shade. Roller or pleated?

If it goes up and then falls you can adjust the tension on the strings. Loosen the screw, rotate the “knob” the string is tied to 1/2 turn. Tighten and try.

Realize the screw only goes into thin wallboard, so after loosening the first time, "tighten" becomes more of a fantasy than a procedure. I've taken to just adding knots in the end.

It doesn't fall, but it only goes up 10-12" Seems like its design that way but I'm not sure.

Pleated shades should retract all the way. You may just need a re string kit. They are easy to do.

The question is, does it JAM at 12", or does it go past 12" and then fall back? The latter is a loose cord. The former is some more unusual problem.

Stops around 12'' and stays there. Its been like this since new. Its like the strings are short and made to stop there. I'm going to take a closer look at it tonight.

Each top string goes through the bottom bar, exits the other end, and is fastened to the bottom on that side, so look for a knot or other malformation in the string around that height. Replacing a string is fiddly, but not hard.

Both strings have springs at the top for tension adjustment.

OP: since you’re about 10 miles from me, PM me if you need help.

So, I messed with it some last night. Seems to just be really stiff going up from lack of use. I got it to go up almost all the way, so were happy. Had to be careful not to pull the bottom stanchions loose from the wall. I think I'll keep working it up/down to see if loosens up and store it up for a bit to see if that helps. No string problems as far as I could tell. Eventually I might replace it with a roller shade, those look nice.

Maybe pass a block of paraffin over the strings. Can't hurt.

Was able to work it up to almost fully open. Then used your idea of the wax on the strings. Working much better now. Thanks.
