Exclamation Cougar High Country Axle Recall

A friend of mine gave me a Nov./Dec. 2011 issue of RV gazette (Canadian publication) to look through and my DW came upon this:

Recall No.: 2011-225
Company: Keystone
Models: 2011-2012 Cougar High Country
Mfg. Recall No.: 11-166

Description: Certain travel trailers were incorrectly equipped with axles rated for 4,400 lbs. instead of 5,200 lbs. A vehicle with incorrect axles could inadvertently be overloaded, which could cause the axle to fail, increasing the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury.
Correction: Dealers will replace axles.

I called my dealer and they told me to check axles as they are stamped with ratings. Sure enough 4400 lb axles. I called dealer to let them know and they are ordering 2 new axles.

My question is WHY WASN'T I NOTIFIED BY KEYSTONE ABOUT THIS RECALL?
Is it because I bought the trailer in USA and imported it myself to Canada? Could be oversight, could be stupidity, maybe just maybe a lawyer could be in sight to find out why. If we hadn't read this magazine we still would not know about this. This is a safety issue as there is a 1600 lb difference on 2 axles. Our trailer was built on April 4, 2010 and before the discovey I was told that the trailer was in the build timeframefor the recall. I would recommend fellow members with a Cougar High Country or Montana High Country as they are built in the same plant to check you axle ratings as this poses great risk for personal injury. I will keep you posted on what Keystone has to say when I get in touch with them after the Holidays.

The only place I know to find the recalls on Keystone products is on their web site. keystonerv.com, here they list all of the recalls. I found the recall on the Cougar Highcountry, but they are showing it for 2011 and 2012 years. Keystone make this recall on Original Notification Date July 5, 2011
NHTSA # 11V-322
Transport Canada # 2011-225
Keystone # 11-16
Everyone with a Keystone trailer should go to their site to see what was recalled on their trailer.

Finding recall notices

Keystone and word of mouth aren't the only info sources. The NHTSA website www.safer car.gov is a reliable source.

Cougar High Country Axle recall

I know this is an old thread but I just read it for the first time and found that I also have the 4,400 pound rated axles on my High Country 299RKS. I looked at the NHTSA and they only have the 321 RES listed. I will contact my dealer on Monday morning to have my axles changed.

re: jramsey post

I would guess that if you do the math, the 4400# axles are probably correct for your trailer. Remember that the pin weight also supports your trailer in addition to your axles. The combined two axles of 8800# plus maybe 1500# pin weight gives you about 10,300# in carrying capacity for the weight of the frame, structure and contents.

Danimal,
Thanks for reminding me that the pin caries some of the weight. I feel a lot better.

Our 2014 Cougar has a GVW of 10,000 lbs and has 4400 lbs axles with 225/75R/15 LRD tires. So, your 10,300 lb GVW isn't too far off from what we're towing. The pin weight is definitely included in the GVW. Same with our Springdale.
