Yep. That's why I posted to never mind about the numbers... To make a comment such as, "When loaded out with full LP and FW I'm 600# over on the rear axle. Does this bother me? Not in the least. Do i care what you think? Now that's funny right there."

Towing anything on the public highways, with a tow vehicle rear axle 600 pounds overweight and to make light of it trying to insult anyone... Well, that's a "hold my beer and watch this" kind of response, so why spend any energy trying to "help"... As George said, there's really no "stupid questions" but there are some really stupid answers. I never thought of it in those terms, but "whoop, there it is"....

The only thing missing missing was the "hold my beer and I'll show you" after the Id tow that with my 1500.

I have a 1/2 ton but I know my limits and the limits of my vehicle. I listen to the solid reasoning of others and keep the safety of my family and others in mind at all times.

To say that a Ram 1500 (or ANY 1/2 ton) can safely do something a 3/4 ton truck can is barely capable of is a good example of someone not in touch with reality.

According to the Ram technical specs the highest cargo capacity you can get in any available configuration is 2,320 lbs. with a towing capacity of 7,740 lbs. Flip that around and the highest towing capacity you can get in any available configuration is 11,650 lbs with a cargo capacity of 1,930 lbs. Using John’s detailed analysis from yesterday, the OP’s set-up that is within the capability of his 3/4 ton (barely) would exceed the capability of any Ram 1500 regardless of configuration. Fact.

The salvage yards have many twisted examples of that type mentality. Unfortunately so do graveyards but the examples aren't as easily identifiable.

I feel like there should be disclaimer “tags” for some posts because if you just stumbled upon this forum you may think it’s perfectly normal to double tow a fifth wheel with a 1500 pickup. I for one am glad I hit the forum when more experienced people were available to share their real world expectations and experience. I really don’t see the point of poking a bees nest as you posted and trying to steer a member away from the overwhelming list of people that know from years of experience that it isn’t even close to a good idea to tow a fifth wheel with a 1500

If you feel that you can get away with it then GREAT but why must you try and convince other people that it’s a viable solution.
You made it out on the lake with thin ice and your trying to wave everyone that’s on shore that “it’s fine”...”I made it”...the problem is the next guy may not

I’m sure there was one guy on the bridge of the Titanic that thought it was perfectly safe to steam thru a ice field in the dark.

With 29 of the 39 years I wore a uniform, this saying accounted for many reasons I met folks. "Just because you can do it does not mean you should." Years later, when I heard the "Just hold my beer, and watch me." I came to think they mean about the same thing.

We were all young at some point and maybe did stuff to fit those statements.
In my career I had to take chances to accomplish my daily job requirements and am really glad that is over for me.
Way to many people I dealt with where the ones who did something they never should have done and I dealt with the people who were harmed from those actions that never should have been done.

I win! I said it first "You've been given good advice by a number of experienced members. One, ah, maybe not so much"
Remember, no good story ever started with "There we were, having a nice salad..."
Now, if I could just shave 4" off the golf cart.

That golf cart looks like it will handle that fifth wheel just fine! No different then some of the tow vehicles you read about on the forums.

The problem here is they can’t even claim they are young. By the photo they *should be* fully myelinated, but they may just defy science....sadly...

(the fully myelinated joke comes from a neuroscientist I know who always says teens are not fully myelinated (brains fully developed) until early 20’s, so that’s why they make stupid choices frequently).

And I agree with jasin1 - there should be a way to put a disclaimer on some posts... Just to protect the innocent newbies.

My Dad had a "child raising situation" that he used to talk about when we three boys were within hearing distance. He'd say, "when a youngen is acting stupid, just put 'em in a barrel and bury it for 3 days, feed 'em through the bunghole. When you dig 'em up, if they still act stupid, just put 'em back in the barrel, bury the damn heathen and go find a new youngen to raise"....

My two brothers and I pushed the limits just like any other "mischievous brat", but I always kept in the back of my mind that I didn't want to push Dad to the "barrel solution"...

When we were grown, had families of our own and we'd all get together, at times that would come up and I asked Dad if he ever contemplated it with us. He sat there, eyes twinkling and a "slight grin" and just said, "You'll never know just how close you came, will you" ???

Ron, go with your common sense on this one. You've been given good advice by a number of experienced members. One, ah, maybe not so much. Minimum 3/4 ton, but go one ton if it's available.
I already have a 3/4 ton gasser, sir and it's in my signature block also.

Thank you.

Sorry, I just got back to this thread late today. My wife and I are enjoying our Mother's day camping in the beautiful State of DE. Anyway, as a retired military safety first has been ingrained in my brain that is why I will never put myself and my family in harm's way and possibly others in the process when it comes to road safetty.

I'm very grateful I found this forum full of good information from a bunch of good and experienced folks in here. Thank you very much for the good advice, especially to John.

For the long trip, I may have to get rid of some tools since I have roadside assistance anyway and the RV and truck are both still under warranty. Have to compensate for generator and filling up the FW tank for some bondacking in the west.

How do you like it so far?
Thanks

25 RES TV Question

Uncoolron: I bought the 25RES when i owned a K3500 Dually. It got totalled when I met a herd of deer. I thought, if I own a Half-Ton towable fiver, I'm buying a half ton. And I did. A 2014 GMC 1500 SLT with the 6.2 LS, MAX trailering package and ITBCS. Standard bed, AirLift 5000 airbags added and the Curt 5th wheel installation system. I'm in Montana, mountain passes be damned this combo is the most comfortable I've ever had. Just did 1600 miles with it through Utah, Idaho and Montana. Weight police be damned, know your driving limits and let the truck do its job. That ain't no 2K hitch weight. Not if you're loading correctly. Have fun, don't overdrive the truck. Cheers!

What does the king pin weigh when your hitched up?

Air bags don’t change any ratings.

CAT scaled at 1410. Aware the bags don't affect the stats. The bags transferred over 300 pounds forward and leveled the ride nicely. I also have a front ride-height leveling kit. TV and fiver brake and trail better than the dually. Thought i would not like the instability of the single wheel set-up, but sure do. We had the dually as we used to have a 17K fiver to haul around.
