Fresh water tank overflows when only about one third full.

Been lucky I guess. Not had any major problems with our 2013 Alpine 3555rl. Now I cannot fill the fresh water tank. I was filling the tank as part of disinfecting the tank and water started flowing out the fill opening and the overflow. Checked gauges and they were showing one third full. Had this happen when water from hose was turned on fast so I slowed the fill rate and the tank filled up. After waiting a few hours for disinfection tried to fill the tank to do the rinse. Tank filled to one third and stated overflowing again. Hmm, slowed fill rate and now matter how slow tank will not take anymore water. No problem we only fill about a third when we are traveling to destination anyway. Anyway to make a long story short tank will not take more than one third. I thought of gauges first thing, but ruled that out. Not a problem because we use city water most of the time anyway, but we will be staying at San Onofre Beach RV park at Camp Pendleton CA for next thirty days and the problem is bugging me. I have been reading posts on the forum for years and do not recall this problem. Would appreciate any ideas, before I dig into the the tank and hose areas this week. Thanks and Merry Christmas to all.

Merry Christmas right back.. Before you do to much, try to drain the water tank, into a five gallon bucket' one bucket at a time. That may give you an indication of water amount you had and rule out a faulty gauge...

Thanks Jim, We pretty much eliminated the gauges, because while we were using the 1/3 tank the water went to empty almost immediately and then tank went dry in one day using the fresh water tank. None our waste tanks were showing much and they usually go up almost as soon as we use them. Will try the five gallon thing just to be sure. Thanks Jim

Just thinking out loud, but I'm wondering if the vent hose was installed too to deep into the tank, and when the water fills to the end of the hose, it pushes out the vent instead if allowing the tank to fill all the way?

If there is too much 'slack' in the vent hose, it will sag and fill with water, preventing the air from venting as you fill the tank. Tie the vent hose up with a wire tie or shorten it so it won't sag. we also use a fill spout/hose that is cut at a 45 degree angle which allows air to escape around the fill hose as you fill the tank.

My Alpine started doing the exact same thing this year.

Great info provided on the vent hose, I had checked the supply hose all along, but didn't even dawn on me to check the vent hose for dips and drops. I will investigate in the spring.

vent hose

My Alpine had the same problem with the vent hose falling down and then I could not fill up the fresh water tank. Remove the panel in the basement to access the vent hose, then lift it up and tie it up. Your problem should be solved.

I like to travel with "some" water in the tank but I don't want to pack 420 pounds of water around. So I drained the tank. Then hooked up the water hose and filled water for 2minutes. Then drained it into 3 gallon buckets to see how much I had filled. Then wrote down how many minutes per gallon it took for 12 gallons.
If I were you, I would fill all you can, then drain into buckets and see if you're close to advertised capacity.

Thanks for all suggestions. Question about vent line sagging jsmith948. Are you referring to what I call the overflow line next to the fill hose? Plan to dig into the area in in the next couple of days will post what I find.
