New batteries

First time in the bush dry camping (with a generator) turned genny off at 11:00p and the battery lasted for about 1 hr just running the furnace and fridge. (both on propane. Time for a new battery. The internet says the new 6 volts and AGM batteries. My buddy a mechanic and RV owner says he runs two 12 volt truck batteries with 1000 cranking amps and has never had any problems. Any thoughts about this type of set up

Have never tried running car/truck batteries. They are designed to provide a lot of cranking amps for a short period of time. RV/marine batteries are designed to provide lower levels of power for a longer period. Two 6v running in a series will provide power longer than a 12 volt. Some say it last longer than two 12v run in parallel. I don't have any experience to compare the two, I just run two 12v RV batteries in a parallel and have never had a problem. I don't do a lot of dry camping though.

New batteries

This explains it, just like stated above:

I also run a pair of group 24's and don't dry camp.

Costco has 6V golf cart batteries manufactured by Interstate for $90 each.
You need amp/hrs not cranking amps. JMHO

When I needed to replace my battery, I opted for the 2 6v golf batteries from Interstate.
1. I can/did get them for cost.
2. I had a 2 battery tray not being used.
3. Golf cart batteries take the abuse being drained repeatedly, even though I dont dry camp that frequently, usually 1 time a year.
4. I dont have the exact figures but the 2 6v was about equal to 3 12v in amp hours.
5. 1 bad 12v will ruin the other 12v, recommended to buy both at the same time.
6. 6 volts dont ruin each other, but still have to buy 2 to run a 12v system.
7. Might tinker with some solar sometime, 6v have more reserve, best bang for money spent.
8. The factory homemade wimpy battery cables were kind of shotty in my book. Wanted to replace, add a marine cut-off switch, LED lights and happy now.
9. Why not... great little project.
10. 2 years ago had a tornado 10 miles away, no power for 22 hours, actaully spent the night in the camper. Had a couple families stay in the house, they lost theirs. A great little backup home when needed.

2 12 volt batteries are fine too.

and 2 6 volt batteries are fine too, it really just depends on what you want.

you have a generator so life is good.

Two 12 volt 27 series batteries will give about 200 amp hours, two 6 volt golf cart batteries is about 250 amp hours. These are typical numbers, they will vary by battery.
