Camping season has finally arrived

Well after a long hot summer its now time for us to start camping again. We just love the cool evenings spent around the fire.

But boy do I envy those of y'all who get to camp in the summer... but man its just ain't comfortable to sit outside drenched in sweat, and slapping mosquitos and gnats.

Headed out next weekend for the shakedown cruise of the new trailer.. Then down to the coast for Christmas and New Years.. then got to plan a few more before it gets hot again in June.

I know what you mean. I keep seeing posts about "winterizing". To me, down here on the Texas gulf coast, "winterizing" means to get ready to go camping

I'm jealous of you guys. Lived my whole life in the midwest. I used to like the seasonal changes, but now that I think about it, I was a kid then. Now seasonal changes mean yard clean up, winterizing, shoveling 10 feet of snow.

One day, when the kids are grown, I hope for a new chapter in a warmer climate.

I guess unbearable heat isn't much fun either, but seems more ideal to deal with that than the polar vortex lol.

Javi:

What's the weather in January typically like west of you in the Cranfils Gap area? Might drag the 5er up there to visit a friend after Christmas/New Year in Houston. I know DFW can be icy at times.

Like anytime during the winter it may be 80F or 20F with snow and rain.. Odds are it will be in the mid 50's daytime and mid 30's at night..

Well, if that's it, I'd call it perfect.

We've been wearing shorts and flip flops on Christmas and the next year cleaning ice and occasionally snow off the windshields.
We're headed to Martin Dies state park this weekend. Weather should be perfect...40-65.

We've been going to try that park for a while... We're headed to Meridian SP next weekend.

Looks like we're both staying close to home. We have a 1.5 hr drive. I've been by Martin Dies a lot but never camped there. It's on Steinhagen Lake, we call it Dam "B". I'll post my "review" for you.
I'm basically doing a shakedown cruise of the 4 month old 5th. Refrig is fixed!

I was just thinking the same thing. I normally go camping starting in September and end sometime in February but this year I had to help my daughter run her daycare while she had some surgery. She's all recovered (well, enough to run her own daycare) and I'm free to hit the Oregon Coast! I just love the storms and kayaking and crabbing on the beautiful clear days that come in between the storms.
Happy Camping!!!

Headed out this weekend to Lake Havasu. Highs in the upper 80's, lows around 60. Perfect

We're doing Palm Springs, old haunts and friends in Palmdale and Death Valley on the way home at the end of January/early February. I could get used to retirement.

Strange how winter is your camping season and the opposite for us Hillbillies. This year though, the DW and I are going to spend some time away from the snow and travel through your neck of the woods.

We have about 10 more years and we will be heading to the warmer climates. I have lived in the north all my life but I am so ready to bid it farewell!!! I would love to be able to camp year round. Just not feasible with a foot of snow in your way. Enjoy your camping season - we are winterized since it has been below 32 degrees already.

Come on down south! We live in WTX and haven't seen anything close to freezing yet. Looks like the cold blast coming in the next week may get us down to 30 and then we go back up. We built our house in a pecan orchard but we're thinking about putting some palms out if it keeps staying this warm

Mid December we are headed to southern NM. Going to stop for a night in OK City, then spend a couple nights in Amarillo. Unfortunately we will be staying at KOA's so my parents can get a cabin. I say unfortunate because I don't like to camp next to major highways. I like to get a bit further away so I don't have to listen to traffic, but at least we will be out and about.

I've stayed at the Amarillo KOA twice. Never noticed any highway noise. Look into the restaurant that has a 72oz steak dinner free if you eat it all.
