Tire Question

I am looking to change my trailer tires and my question is if it is prefferable
to buy tires with a D rating instead of a C rate that the trailer came with.
The debate is which tire is better for the trailer.From what I gathered the
marathon is 6 ply and the other also by goodyear is 8 ply.

I went from D to E on my Cougar and found better ride, more even wear plus the 2 extra plys can't hurt. The sidewalls also seemed to have less bulge with the E tires.

All load range C tires have six plies; all LRD's have eight.

The decision to jump to a higher load range should be based on the individual load (weight) each tire is carrying. If the load is within 15% of the maximum load for the LRC, then moving to LRD is reasonable. The decision should not be made simply on availability, or the often minor difference in price between load ranges---otherwise you may put yourself in an overinflation situation.

You also need to consider your axle load ratings. For example, two LRD tires could carry 5080lb, but an axle may only be rated at 4400. If you are over the axle's rating, you must first lessen/redistribute the load to get under it.

When tire replacement time comes along, the most common upgrade for RV trailer tires is an increase in load range.

The increase in load range seldom presents a fitment problem. The most common obstacle is rim compatibility. Often the Original Equipment rims are not capable of supporting the increased pressure requirements of the next higher load range.

There isn’t much gained with adding a load range without adding tire pressure to take advantage of the available reserves the higher load range will provide.

If you decide to change tire SIZE, beware of tire rim width requirements.

Note rim pressure rating normally stamped on rear, or in valley under tire. If rim is rated for LR-C, and you fully inflate a LR-D tire on that rim, you have exceeeded spec by THIRTY PERCENT. Not safe in my book.

The questions you should answer for this conversation to be helpful are, "Why are you considering the change?" and "What benefits are you looking for?"

Others have posted good responses with several potential issues to be dealt with when contemplating this but some more info from you on the table would help.
