New tires for Tundra..Load Index Question...

Am replacing the tires on my truck. After just 25000 miles the Bridgestone Duelers are shot.....treadwear is terrible.

Am looking at Michelin MS/2 275/65 18. AM CONFUSED ON load rating. Want to go with Load rating E but the dealer only say it has a load index of 114. Are these the same? Did something change? The Michelin site refers to load rating D and E (number of plys).

Don't want to screw this up.....any insight would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I had those tire on my Tundra and they did great. You will exceed the axle rating for he truck before you overload the tires. Don't get overloaded with a lot of tire specs. Any LT tires are going to do well for what we tow, but I, and several friends, have had better service from these Michelin tires than anything else. The ones on the truck I just traded had 30K and looked new. Keep them balanced and rotated. I think that's the key to tire longevity.

Am having some confusion here though......

The tires recommended for my truck are P255/70R 18. Tundras also use P275/65 18 load 112T I want to go with the LT 275/65 18 load 114T. THE LT tire is E rated. The others have some numeric value as they are passenger tires.

Justtires.com tells me the LT 275/65 18 tire is not compatible with my truck but the P275/65 18 is. Confused here.

I have a set of the MS/2 E rated tire on my ram with about 15K on them and you would not think they were on the truck more then a week.

It could be your rims that are not designed to handle the air pressure of an LT 275/65 18 tire at the maximum loaded rating of the tire.

When the manufacture designs a component for the vehicle it is design around the design specs for the mating component. A P rated tire usually has a maximum tire pressure in the 40 PSI range to achieve its load carrying ability. An LT tire may be rated has high as 80 PSI to carry the maximum load for that tire. Thus the rim must withstand the higher air pressure also when aftermarket tires are installed.

The P275/65/18 tire is rated for 2365LBS@44 PSI and the LT 265/70/18 is rated for 3085LBS@80 PSI. See if your rim is rated for this load and air pressure; that could be why you can’t use an LT tire on that truck.
