I made a rookie mistake when I was looking at a 5th wheel. Bought the truck first, 2500. The RV dealer would not release my 5th wheel to me until I had my 2500 upgraded with a DOT certified rear spring pack to carry my rig. If I had a redo, I would have gone with a 1 ton srw. I bought both the truck and rv used and saved thousands of $$. The only reason I went with the 2500 is that I could not find a nice 3500 at the time. If there is any chance you might go with a fifth wheel in the next few years, get the 1ton standard bed(some call it a short bed). In a year or two, when all these new owners decide to dump their rv’s, you will be able to upgrade and save tons of $$. Of course, what you have will sell for less but your purpose for selling is for the larger size, more room. Something to consider.

I would sell him a package. Then you are ready to shop and not pressed to commit to truck or rig.
Whether trailer or 5th wheel get a 3500 or F350 with the tow package. Also if considering a 5ver get a truck with factory installed bed puck 5th wheel prep, this also includes the in bed umbilical 7 pin connector.
The price difference between 3500 & 2500 or F250 or F350 is only a couple thousand. I’d go diesel.

I bought a Dodge 2500 in 2008 but I'm now looking to upgrade to a 3500 or F350 SRW. Why? I have both a 5er and a truck camper, but the wet weight for the truck camper means I'm exceeding my GVWR by a few###. If you want to update your TV, get the one ton, it doesn't cost that much more but is much heavier in construction and has the heavy duty parts you want if you are towing or carrying a load. Even the SRW units have a good payload as well as tow capacity. If money is not an issue, you can find a brand new model or a lightly used recent model at competitive prices. Gas or Diesel? That is a big question to obtain an answer. Good luck.

Exactly the reason I upgraded to F350 SRW.
Be sure it Has factory installed tow package And factory fifth wheel prep in bed.

Pulls great, no stress or strain, cost little more than 250, but if you need it you need it!

Also in the same boat..... hind sight..
I’m way south of where I should be for payload numbers. Looking to upgrade in the near future.
Can “drag” anything behind with power to spare but...
Jumping straight to DRW.
Wise to skip the 3/4 ton one would be.

I see you went to Tahoe so you must be in northern ca. Recommend going to a small town name Corning to look at a truck. When I bought mine last November they had 900 super dutys on the lot with another 200 F150's. Almost bet they have what you want or at least you can fiscally see the differences. Good luck

Today they have about 375 trucks in stock: Still looks to be a great selection! Might be worth pulling up online and browse the lot.

Update on first trip out. Amazing! I couldn't be happier! I literally drove with 3 fingers and one eye tied behind my back!

My experience last month that it is easy to say buy a 3500 vs a 2500 (Ram/cummins in my case). But 'due to covid' the trailer selection/pricing was better than trucks.

In fact, I believe there were two 3500's available within a 150 mile radius with the 'basic options' that I wanted - 4x4/crew cab/cummins that were really still on the lot. The short story is that I was lucky enough to get a 2500/cummins for a good price but now have a 5th wheel setup that I don't need sitting in the shed asended up buying what was on the lot at the local dealer since he gave me a deal I could refuse.

So it is easier said than done this year.
