Actually, they’re called helper springs and they’re designed to be engaged when a load is applied. If you look at the suspension of newer trucks, they don’t have the big stack of springs like the old days. They only use a couple springs when not loaded so they ride softer like a 1/2 ton. When loads are applied, the “helper” springs engage to carry the weight.

Hmm, my understanding is that "Helper" spring does NOT increase your payload capacity. It just "Helps" your truck carry that "max" payload better. So, if you're already over payload before using "helper" spring, you are still over payload with "Helper" spring

You're partly correct, in the "half of the comment" as it pertains to "aftermarket add-on helper springs". They do NOT increase the payload or GVW and are just there to help carry the load better.

That's not the same situation when it comes to the way the OEM suspension system is designed. OEM "helper springs" are designed and in most situations, "computer selected" (read the Ford brochure) to engage at a specific loading to "take over" as an integral part of the "payload management"... They are not the same as "helper springs" that you can buy at JC Whitney to help prevent "rear end sagging"....
