Germany OR RV'ing??

We take delivery of a new 238ML in two days. We had planned on traveling to Germany for our vacation next week (7 days) but are now considering taking the TT to the west coast from Colorado. We are new to RV'ing so I'm not sure we are prepared for a trip like this even though it sounds like a blast. WHAT WOULD YOU ALL DO??

I spent several years in Germany, and loved it. I was in the Army at the time and loved the southern parts of Germany the best. Camping there with an RV sounds cool, but how do you ship it there? Also if this is a new unit, you should consider a shake out trip or two first.

Fill the fridge with schnitzels and Heineken and head for the coast. Enjoy the sunsets with a nice glass of Riesling after a day of tanning in your lederhosen. Sounds like the best of both worlds to me without all those hours cramped on a plane. Hank

We took a long trip this fall in our RV. It was expensive because of gas prices (we traveled 8,500 miles). We stayed mostly in private campgrounds averaging about $40 nightly. Compared to friends who went on an Alaskan cruise or a European vacation that lasted 7-11 days and cost the same, it was a no-brainer for us. We have 7 weeks of memories rather than 7 days of rushing.

SHHHHHH!!!!! We're going on an Alaskan cruise this June..... To complicate things.... It's a 7 day cruise

We are retired and have the benefit of free time, albeit, it's less by the year, grandkids, health issues, and on and on..

NOW is NOT the time to visit Germany or MOST European countries. First, short planning means higher travel costs. Second, the ambiance is diminished, ie; spring or summer flowers. Tourist side opportunities are more limited.

Don't think things in Germany are inexpensive because you will be SHOCKED. Coffee for 2 and a shared dessert on a sidewalk café is like $25 US. Trains and fuel for rental cars is expensive. We went on a combined 5 country cruise and rental car trip last summer, gone 22 days and spent over $10,000 and BELIEVE ME, we did not buy any items of consequence to bring back.

I would put Germany on a back burner and start saving specifically so you can spend without counting quarters (used to be pennies).

Enjoy the new RV and remember, places in California, like Carmel, Monterey,
Santa Barbara, Big Sur and on and on will make you feel you are in Germany either on the coast or the beauty of inland.

We have family in Hannover and Berlin. So, money spent did NOT include hotels for 8 nights of travel which would have easily added $1200.

Plan, plan, plan....save, save, save....enjoy when you do make the decision.

We have decided on the road trip!! Pending the weather forecasts of course. We will leave the kids with the G parents (which was the plan for Germany) and take our yellow lab to the beach for the first time. She loves water (shocking I know!). The plans...snowboarding, casinos, Vegas shows, beach, wineries, good food out and grilling in! WE CANT WAIT!!!

I think you have chosen wisely! We rented a TT 6-7 years ago and took it on a 14 day vacation through Colo. into Kansas, up to Mt Rushmore, and over to the Little Bighorn monument in Montana. We knew then that we were hooked! Bought our 1st camper the next year, and have worked our way up to the 5er that we now have. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I THINK YOU ARE doing the right thing. Like festus2 said bring all the German goodies with you and relax and enjoy California! I love flying as long as I am the pilot the thought ofsitting in a crampped seat being inspected detected infected by TSA ( thanks Arlo) .... I'll take camping any day

Vegas is always fun. Be sure to cross the new bridge on the Hoover Dam. Have not done the new bridge.
Before retiring, did at least 4 sales shows a year in Vegas. Lots of fun and keep in mind shows with lesser names and costs does not mean second rate talent. Only the best get to perform , even at lesser venues.
One of my best memories was a special treat by a Mgr at Caesar's Palace who gave my wife and I a suite in the new tower overlooking the strip and Bellagio Fountain. Slept at night with drapes pulled open. WOW... Did I say WOW!

HEY JOHN with the name SAABDOCTOR I have to drive a Saab to work! I drive the dually when the Sorry About Another Breakdown doesn't start! which has only happened twice! My wife drives: the dually to work. the kids at school love it.they say they have a cool teacher she drives a real truck!!!

Next time, rent an rv in Germany and tour around to your hearts content! We plan on doing this is a few years.
