Companion flange set-up

I adjusted the head so I it sits closer to level. I might put on airbags.

I have the arms on the lowest bolts. I currently have 6 inches between the cap and bed rail but I have a tannou cover and those rails have a 4 in gap. Should I move the head up one hole?

Also I could move the head forward which would but it about 1-1/2” farther in the bed. I currently have a 10.5” gap between the trailer and tailgate when down. If I move it forward is that to little of a gap?

If I am looking att he pictures correctly the first pic shows about 4" between the cap and the top of the bed rail, Should be 6". Second pic shows the tailgate in the open position with the trailer hooked up?

In an ideal world the king pin should be ON the rear axle or about 1" in front of it when towing.

It’s 6” above the actual bed rail, but the cover is about 4”.

Yes the tailgate is down. Someone mentioned in another thread that you shouldn’t have the tailgate to close in the even you have to come in at an angle.
It’s currently over the axle but like I said, I could move it forward a bit more. Wasn’t sure if it was worth the effort or not.

Also I have a plastic plate for the mating surface, but should there be grease on the pin itself?

I don’t grease mine. I have a bar that slides across the back. If I remember yours has the clam shell (2 halves) that close around the pin. I would check with B&W about greasing the pin

Take a look at the Companion Hitch Manual.

I use a little dab of White Lithium Grease on the inside of jaws as directed.

I have a B&W, grease just the pin itself, or the jaws of the head, keep a lube plate on it as well. Get that clearance of 6" above the bed cover rails. 4" is pushing your luck. I set mine at almost 7 above the bed rail because I have a steep decline out of the side of the yard when pulling the camper out the side gate onto the street (same goes for backing it in).

We purchased a new truck (F350 DRW) and a Montana 3791RD last year in November. We have the B&W Companion hitch. I set up 1”forward of the axle as I have no cab clearance concerns since it is a long bed. I started at the highest height (18”). We would check for level when traveling and overall height. I wanted as much rail to cap clearance as possible. We settled at the lowest setting (16”). It gave us a level unit when traveling and nearly 6” of rail to cap clearance. More importantly, it keeps our overall height below 13’6” (13’4 1/2”) to the front a/c.

YES. I use molibdenum disulfide grease. It's made for heavy loading, and provides extreme load lubrication. Doesn't wash off, either.
