Propane tank handles
Hi,
The handles on my propane tanks when opening them, don't stop at a certain point, you can keep going.
Is this normal? And if it isn't, what should I do?
thx.

I have a small cylinder that I use for our grill that has that issue, the valve handle just never hits a stop. I just turn it a few full turns open and call it good.

I would take those tanks to a propane dealer and ask a technician to perform an inspection. An internal part to the valve assembly may be broken.
Cheers!

They are not supposed to do that. Have them checked.

Agree, not normal. When opening them, they should be tightened all the way open. If you don't tighten them all the way open, they can leak. If yours is not tightening, replace it with a new tank, or at best, try to get this one fixed.

You don’t list any info on your trailer. If you go up to the "UserCP" you can add a signature on make, model, year of trailer and tow vehichle. This will help you get better context on the replys without a lot of back and forth questions. If this info was available we'd know the age and capacity of the tanks.
Seems strange to me that both tanks have this issue. Are they original to the trailer or are they 20 lb. "Exchange" tanks? Are they 30 lb. tanks and did this just happen after having them filled? Depending on what this info reveals as to my recommendation. It's not normal and needs to be rectified.

Agree with Marshall; age and size of the tanks is important information. Two of them doing that is very unusual. If you are using "exchange" 20lb. tanks there is no telling what kind of shape they're in, I've gotten tanks doing that will all kinds of problems.

Propane tanks are "ticking bombs" if they aren't working properly. A main valve on a tank is not something to take for granted. Imagine being parked at a remote campsite, or even in a rest area on an interstate highway "when that valve finally does fail"... No amount of "should have or could have" will eliminate the rapid escape of propane in/around your RV.
Now is the time to have those valves inspected by a competent tank service facility.
The last thing you want is to be standing by your trailer in some remote area, waiting for a fire department to show up with propane gas spewing out of a failed tank valve.....

That’s not normal. Swap them out. Or take them to your local LP dealer.
I used to deliver LP, filled lots of small tanks also, those valves are bad.
