Gotta love mechanically minded women. They are keepers. Harbor freight has many affordable Digital Volt Ohm Meters (DVOM) available.
I worked for a local electric power company for 37 years and found many truck/trailers with crazy wirings. This is a great place for help.

Edit: we always had to make all truck/trailers wired to a national standard. ( I will check to see if I have a picture of it.)

Having spent a lifetime (73) dealing with exactly those things "creative" is not the word that comes to mind.
