This site is operated by a third party, not by Costco. Use of this site (and any destination sites you reach through this site) is subject to the site's Terms of Use and Privacy Policy, rather than those of Costco.
I'm a big Costco fan but, in '04 the Costco recommended dealer (25 mi. away) said they would match the price I got from my local (<2 mi.) dealer on a long bed, 2500,Cummins if I took a short bed, 1500, Hemi off his lot. Saying ..... drum roll please ...... "the 1500 will tow your trailer just fine".
Most of these deals are on dealer stock only.

Just saying, Buyer beware. JM2˘, Hank

Out of curiosity only, $1,000 off what exactly?

It's a $1,000 discount after what ever price you negotiate (or employee discount) on any 1500,2500,3500 truck.

my wife used it on her new 3500 Silverado that she ordered in March.

Drew, I don't understand your reply. I was only stating my experience with the program and warning members about the fine print. Offering me $1000 dollars off of a 1/2 ton short bed gasser at the price of a 3/4 ton diesel long bed because it was dealer stock only is not a bargain in my judgement and would not have towed my trailer safely.

Wow! You type faster than I do. The fine print at the top of that ad as I highlighted it says that the deal is NOT from Costco and is third party. You were lucky and found a good dealer, or one loaded with inventory, I was not so lucky. As I stated, my deal was 16 yrs. ago on the truck in my signature. Stay well and travel safely, Hank

Drew, I'm sure Hank meant no harm, and certainly didn't hurt your feelings as obviously happened.

SO.... somehow THAT was Costco's fault? I'd like to hear your logic on that one.

my wife gets an extra unexpected $1,000 off on a truck she ordered in March. I can see where my feelings would be hurt about that.

what is with you people?

We’re just sorry dogs, the lot of us!
Drew, no one was harsh with you. If you read closely you’ll see no harm intended on either side.

Wow, this is obviously a sensitive issue that the OP's very impassioned about. I personally have never used any "advertised discount" like this. In my limited experience they are "traffic generators" intended to get folks into the establishment so the sales staff can have a go at you.

The stratagy that's worked well for me for decsdes is to shop when buisness is slow. A hungry salesman is an eager salesman and a hungry establishment is eager to make a deal. I don't negotiate "discounts" or monthly payments, only final cost to me. I don't care how they arrive at that number, or where they put their numbers in the equation. I negotiate a "cash offer", even if financing.

The credit union I deal with will give me a blank check that's endorsable up to x$. No, it's not a line of credit for a personal loan, it's a vehichle loan, or boat or home mortage loan. When I was working I bought vehicles by using my 401k. The plan I had would allow me to pay with my 401k without lowering my 401k account. They would take the money back via my pay check. So there are many alternatives to using the dealers finance dept.

This is what has worked for me. It may not work for you. We all have our methodologies and whatever works for you is obviously what's best FOR YOU. So thank you for sharing Costco's offer but there's absolutly no reason to be insulted or indignant if someone doesn’t share your enthusiasm for it.

Different strokes for different folks.
I wrangle my own deal, when I am finished I am pretty sure bringing up the Costco (or any) discount would get me thrown out of the dealership.
I know what I want to pay for the vehicle, I don't care what colour it is. What's in stock, what options will I settle for. I don't want to wait 3 months to have it made. I want to see the sticker on the pillar before I sign. Near the end of the month, near the end of their year and the new models are about to come in gets me what I want. It works for me. This only works on domestic vehicles. European and Asian dealers are a different beast.
YMMV

My apologies.... I think we might have got screwed?

Let me start from the beginning... We were snowbirding down south when our new camp neighbors had this brand new 1 ton chevy silverado. My wife LOVED that truck, and we made friends with our neighbors over the next month or so. We were both working remotely, looking out the window at that truck for so long my wife finally says, "I'm buying that truck".

I said honey we already have a truck (2020 Denali duramax), and she said I don't care I'm getting it. I said ok call the dealer, wire them the money and get the truck. Well, the dealer didn't have the truck with options a,b,c...x,x,z, which is BS because we are a instant gratification society thanks to Burger King with their "have it your way" right now campaign. I mean come on, it only like 50,000 different combinations to have on the lot. But, I'm not sure about your wife, but if mine ain't happy.... well, then nobody is happy. Order the truck....

The truck got ordered in March, with the EXACT options and color she wanted and since we get the employee price we didn't need to negotiate (so I thought). June 1st the dealer called and told my wife to log on to costco and get authorization code for a $1,000 discount. I sensed something was fishy about the whole thing.... but he said the discount is funded by Costco and GM and it didn't affect the dealer profit or his commission.

I didn't realize she could have negotiated MORE off then the employee price, minus another $1,000 off. I mean, we're just a couple of kids learning as we go.... We don't have the years of experience buying trucks like most people here.

So I want to thank you, and next time we buy a truck we'll certainly run it by everyone here before with sign on the dotted line.

I also have another problem.... we have 1 too many vehicles now, anybody want to buy a 2020 Denali Duramax?

I'm betting about three days on autotrader would do the trick. I'm sure for the Facebooker's and TicToker's and Twitterer's and Numbnutter's the opportunities would be endless. You may very well be surprised at the money this truck will bring.

I don’t think you got too bad of a deal….some dealers like the one I went to would not even give employee pricing. They said they didn’t have to participate in it if they didn’t want to. (Chevy dealer)
They wanted full sticker price and nothing less. I think your deal is probably better then some out there right now

The current market is a sellers market so negotiating is very "difficult at best". Did you get "screwed? Only you can answer that. One of the worst things a buyer can do is get "glassy eyed" by allowing their desire yo have drive their decision making. A salesperson can smell it like a shark smells blood in the water. Add the impatience of "want it now" and haging money "burning a hole in your pocket" and my guess is yes you paid a premium for that truck. The bottom line is was it worth it to you? That's all that matters.

To me I look at vehichles like a tool. It's a terrible investment that looses a lot of money the instant you become the owner. Don't get me wrong, I absolutly love all things that move. If I had Jay Leno's wealth I'd have a huge collection as well but I don't. I take months to buy a vehichle because I'm an opportunist. Patience will get me what I need at a cost that I'm willing to pay. Sometimes it's what I really want, sometimes it's only what I need. I guess I followed my father's footsteps in that regard. He typically bought 1 year old cars and took his time doing it. I can’t recall a "lemon" or "problem" car that he ever had. So like I said, it's your money so jow uou use it is your buisness snd what you consider "a great deal" may not be what everyone considers "a deal" at all and thats ok.
