How to remove tank vent?
Okay, so I have a super easy question here for Alpine owners. I have a 2014 Keystone Alpine 3500re and I am trying to sanitize the fresh water system for the first time. The owner's manual says to remove the half moon plastic tank vent that I have pictured below, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get it off! I am afraid that I'm going to break it if I just pry it off! Any suggestions.? Thanks in advance. Jonathan

I’m sure it pops off, but if your trying to get sanitizer into the fresh tank, just fill the hose before you hook it up.

It will come off moving it up. I'd take a block of wood, hold it against the flat bottom of the cover and gently tap the bottom of the wood block to move the cover up.

chuckster57--I never thought about that--good idea! I prefer to do it according to the owners manual (if I can get the tank vent cover off), but if I can't get the cover off, then I will give your method a try. Thanks. -Jonathan

Keep in mind that the Owner's Manual is a generic booklet that covers every trailer that Keystone manufacturers. Some have a "gravity fresh water tank fill" some have a valve fill in the convenience center, some have a connection dedicated to the tank (also in the convenience center or located on the outside wall of the trailer)...
Trying to "follow the owner's manual" in every trailer that rolls off the line is impossible. So, adaptation and ingenuity are the key to successfully getting things to work for the vast majority of trailers...
I've got a gravity fill port for my fresh water tank, so I just insert a 18" piece of old clear vinyl tubing stuck on the end of a funnel and pour bleach into the tank, diluted with water, of course... On some trailers I've seen, pouring 2 cups of bleach into the 1/2" water hose and then connecting it to the faucet is much simpler than "risking damage to a vent cover"... YMMV

Here's the answer to how to remove the tank vent!
Ok, so I appreciate all the suggestions, but here is what happened...
I tried to hammer on a block of wood from the flat end towards the round end, but was unable to budge the tank vent. I finally took a picture from the underside of the vent, which showed 2 tabs on the right and left side. I tried sticking a flat bladed screwdriver up there and sure enough, it came right off. Here are pictures I took after removing the vent which show why it wouldn't budge when I tapped up on it. Anyhow, I hope these help the next person b/c this should have been a 1 minute repair, but it turned into a several day event. I even called Keystone RV and they also said to push up on it, from the flat towards the round end, but as you can see from this pictures, this won't work. I was just about to try the "add bleach to the hose before you fill the fresh water tank" idea, which is a great idea, but I lucked out at the last second and got the tank vent off. Also, here's the section on what to do from the owners manual, but frankly I think these instructions suck. It's obvious now what has to be done, but having never done it before, I can see lots of people breaking the tank vent or giving up all together. Thanks again to everyone for their advice.
From the 2014 Keystone Alpine owner's manual:
"Power Fill Models:
1. Drain the tank by opening the low point drains. Close the drains after water has drained.
2. Prepare a chlorine bleach solution of ¼ cup to one gallon of water for every 15 gallons of tank capacity.
Example: Use 2 ¾ gallons of the solution for a 40-gallon tank. If using Ultra bleach concentrations,
reduce bleach to 1/8 cup to one gallon of water.
3. Add solution to tank through the tank vent located on the side of the coach. This vent is an arched
shape part with the words “tank vent” on the vent cover. The vent cover is removable and held in place
by detents on either side of the vent. Remove the bug screen inside the vent. Using a funnel and tube,
add the sanitizing solution. Reinstall the screen and cover when done.
4. Open each faucet/fixture until a distinct chlorine odor is smelled. Close faucets and let stand 4 hours.
Keystone RV Company Owner’s Manual 4/1/2014 55
5. Drain system and flush with fresh water until chlorine odor and smell is gone. (If a water filter has been
added, change it at this time). "
