Walmart has the adapter in the sporting goods section for about 10 bucks if I recall
I prefer the 1 gallon/4.5 pound tanks as there is no problem refilling at you usual propane dealer: http://www.campingworld.com/shopping...b-1-gal-/56052
Ours came from Amazon but the price is way too high now.

I haven't refilled for awhile. There really is no risk I can see, as there is a relief valve on the little cans. I use them around the house and for airplane camping, but usually now just buy the cans on sale because the new ones seem to last longer.

Not to "minimize" your perception of risk, but I've been refilling 1 pound propane bottles for 15 years without incident. I also stand "by the fence" at ACE Hardware while they refill my 20 and 30 pound bottles. I've been "standing and watching" for well over 40 years without incident. That's not to say that the next time I refill a couple of "one pounders" or the next time I have ACE Hardware refill my grill propane bottle won't be the time that you all read about the explosion at ACE Hardware.....
Inherently, there's always a "certain level of risk" but I'd submit that in my experience, the risk with refilling propane containers (following the published procedure) is likely to be much less than towing with "Chinese May-Pops" on a Keystone trailer....

I bought my adapter at Harbor freight for about $20.00, no problems at all, but I check for leakage with soapy water every time.

There is an inherent risk in any activity we do. Refilling cylinders marked "do not refill" indicates the possibility of a potential hazard. Whether that is over filling, a failed pressure relief valve or what have you there is a risk. If you think that those cylinders won't leak, rupture or explode you are only kidding yourself. They are not made to the same standards as refillable cylinders.

Of course it's not recommend to refill them, I refill a bottle about 10 times before pitching them. Hope all that thing makes sense.
Good luck!

I've been doing this for years, yes, put it in the freezer and you get about 60-70% refill.

Easy to refill from a 20 lb take. You freeze the empty 1 lb tank, using the fill adapter (Harbor Freight) , screw them together, turn the tanks over and fill for 1 minute.

How do you get liquified propane from the 20 lb cylinder into the 1lb cylinder? Unless I am missing something, when doing this process you are only transferring some gas.

You turn the 20 lb cylinder upside down before opening the valve.
