Noise?

I have a new to me 2013 duramax with 53,000 mi. Sometimes when I shut the engine off it sounds like a rumbling noise that slows to a stop. This my 1st diesel so not sure if this is normal. Thanks

Howdy tdawg,

The truck is a turbo diesel I presume?

If so the noise is probably the turbo spinning down.

If the noise is loud enough that could indicate bearing issues.

If my ford is in a regen when I shut it down I can hear some odd noises coming from underneath near the DPF.

Aside form that the only other noise I have heard was the turbo, but that doesn't happen often either as it is very faint and you need to be outside the truck when you shut down.

I am still under warranty as it was a certified truck when purchased this summer. I just don't want the dealership to tell me its normal. If another 2013 duramax owner here has heard the same at least I have some background on what's normal. Truck runs great.

On ours, it sounds like a pump running for several seconds when we shut it down. Has done this from new, and have never had any problems with it. 2012 Dmax

I can't say that I've ever heard anything on mine other than some DPF noise from time to time.

As for your warranty, your duramax is covered for 100k miles, certified or not. That's anything in the duramax system including NoX sensors in the exhaust for the DPF.

On the Ford SuperDuty diesels, at ignition "shutoff" the DEF pump pulls all DEF out of the lines (to prevent freezing damage). It sounds like a "fuel pump Brrrrrrrrrr" and is located near the forward driver's side of the bed. The pump runs for about 10 seconds then shuts off.

There are other "normal diesel noises" (per explanation of the diesel tech at Ford) but most of them are under the hood and usually are "long gone" by the time I get my seat belt unbuckled and the door open. But, that DEF pump keeps running, usually until I'm walking away from the truck. It was "unsettling" until I figured out what it was....

Maybe your noise is similar?

Thanks for the info. I may run it by the dealership just to satisfy my curiosity.

Mine does same thing. It is a pump that drains the Def line so it doesn't freeze. Mine runs sometimes for a minute or so.

I have never heard such a noise with my 2013 Duramax, but I also have a hearing problem. Having had turbo bearing problems on a previous truck though would make me thoroughly check out the turbo. Good luck.

"Nothing wrong with my hearing that you talking louder won't cure." The FAA doc says my hearing is fine, BTW. Good enough for me.

My Cummins just gives an occasional serpentine belt chirp at shutdown. A compression vs inertia thing, I suppose. No DEF, pumps, moaning or thingies.

I have narrowed down noise as it sounds like air coming back up through the air cleaner box you can also hear when you let off accelerator to return to idle. Taking into dealer to have them look at maybe its normal but just want to be sure.

A rumbling turbo would be bad.. very bad...

That is described like re-circulation from a turbo blow-off type contraption, but I don't actually know if such a thing is on a turbo diesel ford.

To the OP - Does the Duramax have a waste gate? I ask because, on the earlier Ford 6.7 engines, the vacuum solenoid on the waste gate would, for lack of a better term, make a 'farting' sound bout 15 - 20 seconds after shut down. The fix is to have the vacuum harness replaced. Don't know if Isuzu uses a waste gate.

truck is back to dealer. the shop manager came out and listened to the noise. He said he has not heard that before but thought it was coming from exhaust on right side down low. Will see what they say when they call back after checking out.

You have received some great answers here. I to an a "new to me" Duramax owner. Purchased a 2013 Silverado in May 2015, 27,000 miles (32,000 now). It has been a trouble free truck. I have found a lot of help on a duramax forum (don't know if I can give an exact name here but if you google you can find it).

This should be monitored and avoided if at all possible. Turbo temps are very high when in regen. It is not if but when you will have turbo failure after enough high temp shutdowns.
