Door Lock Caution

NOTE our door lock was not part of the recent lock cylinder recall but yesterday we tried to lock our door and found that the deadbolt was not working the key just turned but not locking. What I found was the 2 screws that hold the internal lock cover plate had fallen out causing the link rod to detach, the scary thing is that if we had been inside with the door locked we couldn't have opened the door as the link rod also works the inside latch.
The repair is simple just remove the 4 Robertson screws take off the lock cover re position the cylinder and lock rod and replace the screws(note the screws that had fallen out were still inside the lock housing) This will be part of my annual check list

I sometimes leave the garage man-door locked from the outside and have noticed than I can still open the door from the inside. If this is a safety design standard, then I like it for obvious reasons.

I understand your concern about being locked in but I would guess the screws that you remove to fix it are on the inside. Also, we do have the emergency exit windows that could have been used if the screwdriver was outside.

Will have to take a look at mine as I have one deadbolt that I can only use from the inside as I cannot get the key to go into the slot on the outside.

Yes we have emergency exit windows but they are of poor design for example the height from the ground is ridiculous and the chance of dropping the window is also high. the lesson learned is to keep a screwdriver inside and not in outside storage
