increasing tire width

I have 205/75/14 that are going on 9 yrs old. they still have lots of tread but Im going to replace them this spring.
I would like to increase the width to 225 for the extra pound capacity. I wont go above the 3500 lbs per axle. but was thinking the extra margin might run cooler last longer, be safer in general. There seems to be plenty of room on the inside of the well. do those tires use the same rim? Is the extra width weighted one side or an other?

9 yrs old.....WOW!!!! Tires should be changed every 3-5 yrs regardless of tread, they break down and are not safe so I guess it's a good thing you're changing. Not sure what type/brand you are going with, I checked the Carlisle website and they only show a 215 in a 14" tire, they do take a half inch wider wheel, but that is debatable if they would work on your stock wheel. The biggest difference I noticed was only 90 lbs difference in load capacity. Granted that is 360 lbs with 4 new shoes, just not sure that's worth it vs going to a 15" wheel and tire.

ya your right. after looking a little harder I would probly be better off just upping my load range to D, and not worry about clearances.

.

The ST215/75R14C is probably your best upgrade, especially if your current rims are at least 5.5” wide. You pick-up more than 400# of load capacity reserves at 50 psi. The size difference is about a half inch wider and a half inch taller.

I went from a 205-14 to 225-15s....Got a deal on tire/wheel assemblies. No problem with clearances, more weight capability and the ride nicer.
