Oregon - Hwy101 to I5

We are planning to be in the Reedsport - Florence area on Hwy101 and want to head east back to Interstate 5 towards Eugene. Which would be the best highway to take : 38 from Reedsport OR 126 from Florence?? Is there much difference between the two? Looks like about the same distance and time from 101 to 5.

By far, the best road would by Hwy 38. Lots of passing opportunities, no grades to pull and pretty recent repaving. Would prefer it over Hwy 126 any day! Hope you're enjoying our great weather. We're heading over to Lakeside which is south of Reedsport & Winchester Bay this coming weekend for a little salmon fishing in the ocean. Have fun!

saltflatracer & other Oregonians -----
Thanks for this info. We have camped often in your State Parks all up and down the coast and are reasonably familiar with them. Most, if not all, are extremely good campsites. We are planning to head along the coast next week and are looking at some private - as well as State Parks - along the way. If, by chance, you have stayed at or have any comments about any of these private ones, we'd appreciate your feedback:
(These are from north to south along the coast .....)

1) Neskowin Creek 2) Whaler's Resort 3) South Jetty 4) Midway or Winchester Bay ? These are RPI/Enjoy America resorts.

2) Near Eugene --- Armitage County Park ??? OR can you recommend one close to Eugene? Hookups would be fine but not necessary. Seems like Armitage has no showers but who needs to shower when camping? lol.

This trip into Oregon is more or less a scouting expedition to see what the private sites are like.

One last question ------ would you recommend reservations this time of year in the State Parks? Or just in certain ones?

Thanks

Personally we haven't stayed at Neskowin, Whalers or South Jetty, but am sure they are just fine. We have stayed at Winchester Bay RV & it's very nice, but reservations are a must. Going up the coast, we would recommend North Lake Resort in Lakeside, Heceta Beach RV Resort in Florence, Premier RV Resort in Lincoln City & Fort Stevens State Park in Astoria.

In the Eugene area, I would suggest Richardson Park which is a county park by Fern Ridge Lake. Also, Riverbend Resort in Harrisburg (25 mi from Eugene) or another Premier Resort Park in Coburg just off I-5 & close to Eugene. The website www.orcamper.com is helpful also.

Hope this helps you a little bit. Happy camping!

Checked out (online) the various parks in the Lane County network ---they seem quite nice and will definitely give Richardson a close look. Thanks for your info and comments!

Yes! Hands down 38 is by FAR the best. Just a few miles East of Reedsport is a really great place to view Elk. I think it's called Dean Creek. There are many times some really monster bulls out there.

Halibutman & saltflatracer -
Thanks for your suggestions about Hwy 38 and Richardson County Park. We followed Hwy 38 --- a very scenic and well-maintained road with newly-paved sections here and there. We did see some elk - from a distance - and it is near Dean Creek!
Richardson County Park was a gem. The best park we stayed at during the 2 weeks in Oregon. If we are in that area again, we'd definitely go back.

Thank you both for the great tips!

Festus, hope you enjoyed our part of the world. We have been lucky enough to live in this are most of our lives.
Love camping the Oregon coast year round, come down during the stormy part of the year.

Russ & Paula -
Yes, we certainly enjoyed our trip along the coast and at Richardson County Park. I see you live in or around Portland. When we were heading north back to BC, we took 205 through and around Portland rather than 5. We managed to time our trip through there during non-rush hour but it still seemed extremely busy regardless.
Pulling a 5th wheel through Portland is not my idea of fun but going through Seattle or any other large city is not any fun either. The rest of the state is great!!!!

Canon Beach Oregon route to Eugene

Hello to you Oregon folks. I am currently completing a camp host gig at Tugman SP and wil be taking some time on the central and north coast next week. Ending up in Canon Beach for 2 nights. Then heading back to California via Eugene Armitage county park for a few days.

Would love to hear opinions on the best route back to Eugene from Canon Beach and Armitage Park.

Have a good camping day.

We live in Reedsport and agree, 38 is the better route. Would suggest that if you want to stay cool stay on the coast ! 60's and 70's here, we love it.

As far as State parks goes, reservations are the safe way but you may be able to slide in during the week for a night or two. Pretty sure weekends are booked.

Have Fun, wave at us when you go by .

Hi BulletOwner1 -
I did wave to you when I went by way back in September of last year but you didn't wave back! My OP is from last year so I've been home a while and not planning another trip down your way this year.
Will try again next summer ----- where will you be standing so I can watch for you as you wave?

Have a good one

Highway 26 to 217 South, connect with I5, use rest stops on I5. Passing lanes on 26, best time is during the week, roads to the coast very busy on the weekends. Using 101 to the Hebo area and going to Salem but do not remember how they would be with a trailer so cannot recommend. Highway 26 main route from your area to I5.

Well, that's embarrassing! Didn't ever read the date, Duh!

I'm going out right now and stand at the corner of 38 and 101 and wait for you !!

The only thing with 26 is it does have some healthy climbs in it, but good passing lanes. It also has several areas of sunken grade = Big Dips!
