Is this an attic vent that is broke

Climbed up on top today to have a look around. Found this missing a cap with some broke pieces in it. I'm assuming it's some type attic vent since it's in the middle of the living room ceiling with nothing in the inside coming from it. Don't know how long it's been this way but I didn't see any signs of water damage. It was dry inside it but it's been hot and hasn't rained in a few days. I'm going to make a make shift cover for it till I can get it fixed. Question is, can I just get another cap that fits it or will the whole thing have to be replaced? Measures 4 to 4-1/8 inch on the outside.

Yes, that is an attic vent. Don’t you love the unrestricted airflow?

There is no way that could allow any air flow. I can see the pamphlet now....... Complete attic ventilation system to keep your RV cool in the hot summer.

Nope, you'll have to peel the sealent off, unscrew the old broken base and screw on the new one. Then reseal it covering the screws and edges.

I would replace it (or completely rebuild what's left of it)...

From your photos, the insect screen is broken and much of it is missing. Just replacing the cap would be a "great avenue" for mice, roaches, flies, wasps and any other "critter that wants a warm place to nest"....

They do sell "just the caps" but on yours, the center threaded section that secures the cap is no longer "part of the mix"...

Also, in the current condition, it's a "funnel to channel rainwater into the insulation in the ceiling"... Until you do get it repaired, use some tape and "weatherproof what's left up there"....

Found a plastic planters peanut jar lid that fits it perfect. Going to screw that to it and put some dicor around it until I can get it fixed right. Never removed one before I have just replaced caps on other vents. That will be something new to me. It's something all the time.
