It is your equipoment, so you can do as you wish.
Note however that the manufacturer, and I believe every trailer manufacturer, recommend heavy grease like wheel bearing grease. Why? Because insufficient lubrication yields heavy wear, and if the ball lube isn't enough can lead to the ball gauling and then loosening the nut on the ball. Several folks have reported nearly losing their trailer that way.
Your choice, but I follow the manufacturers directions to lube the ball, and lube the Equal-i-zer pivot points, with either Reese Ball Lube or wheel bearing grease. It is cheap insurance.
