Fan on Power Converter Runs Constantly

Hooked up at the campground last night and noticed the fan on power converter running. Didn’t think much of it and went to bed. Woke up and fan is still running. Went out to check the battery (Optima bluetop-2 yrs old) and was very warm and hissing as if it was boiling.

Un-hooked the battery for now but concerned as to the cause. This is the first time this has happened since we bought new in 2017.

Two probable causes. 1 the battery is defective 2 the converter is defective and has damaged the battery. The "hissing" is the electrolyte boiling out of the battery. You say you disconnected the battery, be very careful doing that with a battery actively boiling as they produce hydrogen gas which is very explosive.

You can have the battery tested but my guess is it's toast. When you replace it check the voltage and if it remains high start checking the converter.

Sounds like a bad battery. Have it load tested. The converter could be overcharging it but I would look into the battery first.

Since the battery is "currently disconnected" this is an excellent time to check the voltage output of the converter. With NO battery connected, the battery cables from the converter should read 13.6 VDC +/- 0.2 VDC (13.4-13.8 VDC)

If it does, the converter output is OK, but you may still have an issue with the converter not "changing from bulk to absorption mode"...

My guess is that your battery is defective and probably has a shorted cell. That would reduce the battery output voltage by about 2.1 VDC so the battery would read around 10.5 VDC or in that range. You can check it with a voltmeter to confirm.

In theory, if the battery has a shorted cell, with an output of 10.5-11 volts, the converter would "kick into bulk mode" to try to recharge the battery. With the shorted cell, the battery would likely overheat as it simply can't store that much energy.... While in "bulk mode" the converter fan will run continuously.

Long story shortened: Your battery is "burned up" and the converter may also be damaged. Check the converter output, if it's 13.6 VDC, install a new battery and watch it closely.

That’s some solid information. I am only 90 minutes from home thankfully. Will definitely check into both with this information! Thank you so much
