Clear Bra?

I have had 3M clear bras installed on 2 vehicles, both SUV's that got a lot of road time during bug season. I like that I can scrub the bugs off without being concerned about damaging the paint. I am considering buying some 3M material and installing it on the 5th on the front bottom corners, and maybe behind the axles. I think I would want the front cap professionally installed. The installer that did both our SUV's said he has done quite a few Class A motorhomes. Has anyone done this?

We've definitely considered it on the lower part of our front cap. Two of our previous campers had rock shields, and that was nice. We go to some pretty sketchy places with ours, and we've noticed a couple of scratches. Only issue is expense - we wouldn't do it ourselves. We are going to get mud flaps for our vehicle. Hopefully that will help a bit.

We towed our Springdale into some pretty "rough" places. At first I didn't have mud flaps. We had everything from "caked on mud" to yellow paint splotches from crossing the center line on a freshly painted highway. The "final straw" was the oil and tar that I had to clean off the lower front of the trailer after towing about 50 miles on a "newly sealed highway". WHAT A MESS !!!!!

When we bought the F250, the first addition was front and rear mud flaps. So far, the only thing on the front of the Cougar is a light "road film". The inside edge of the mud flaps, however, have been caked with mud, salt, yellow paint and a host of "stuff" that I wouldn't want on the Cougar.

I think they are a "required" add on for any truck towing a fifth wheel. I have a friend who bought the "across the rear" road guard that fits onto the truck receiver. He has been happy with that as well, but it seems a "hassle" to take it off and store it when not towing.

I think anyone towing an RV would benefit from mud flaps. I'm sure your RV will thank you for the addition.

Second that JRTJH... Did the same and installed both front and rear mud flaps before receiving our 5er. Flaps have been a mess, but camper front very little.

I found this removable mud flap that fits over the receiver. $88 at Amazon. I might try this thing:

That's essentially the same as my buddy has although I don't know if it's the same name brand or not. He is happy with it, but I just didn't think it was as convenient as permanently installed mud flaps. He does have issues with where to store it when not towing. Up here, during the winter, he prefers not to leave it on the truck, something you wouldn't have issues with "down there where it doesn't snow" LOL

Have used a couple of options......if you want quick removal check out the Rock Tamers

http://www.etrailer.com/Accessories-.../ERT00108.html

If you are looking for full coverage try......Ultra Guard......This is what I am currently using and prefer thel full coverage over quick removal. I am still able to remove the Ultra Guard in less than 3 minutes.

Go to www.mudflaps.com and look at the Towtector Brush System. They mount to the receiver hitch and are very easy to install/remove if you buy their hitch adapter that remains attached to the Towtectors. A wall bracket is included with the purchase for wall storage. Not a mark on my SRX.

All of these are great. I use flaps behind the wheel and one across the back on the receiver. Mine is home made with square tubing and a tailgate mat. If you have a newer dmax with stock exhaust you need one that steps down behind the tailpipe or it will melt them during regen

Good point on the DMax tailpipe. Towtector makes a modified model to avoid melting the brush. I think I would have a muffler shop modify the exhaust angle.

Yeah, I looked at/considered it. Was easier to make my own with a drop like the towtector. Bought a tailgate mat for $35, about $20 in steel tubing and an hour to cut, weld, and paint. Too easy

Anybody tried clear Plasti Dip? I read on some truck forums that people are using it on the front of their vehicles, can't see why it would not be great on the RV!

Okay, I promised a while back that when I got back down to NM I would add a pic of the rear flap I made for my truck. Finally got around to putting it on the truck yesterday (took the RV in for some warranty work) and actually remembered to take a pic. It is made from 1 1/4" square tubing, with a 60" tailgate mat cut in half and screwed about every 3" with 1" self tapping screws (you can see the reflection in the bumper). A u-bolt clamps it to the receiver hitch. I have been considering adding a couple eye bolts to the sides as well as a couple on the truck frame (already some holes where I could bolt them) and use a turn buckle to give more support. I may also add some weights to the bottom of the flaps just to help keep the wind from pushing them up and debris from pushing through. I have them set at 5 1/2" from the ground, when loaded up, they are about 3 3/4". Between this and my truck flaps, nothing hits the front of the camper/trailer.

Since the u-bolt clamps to the hitch shank, I can use it on the WD hitch or a regular shank. Normally I just have a regular shank in when towing the 5er, but I had the WD shank in because I had to go hook up t the car trailer as well. If I didn't use it on multiple shanks, I could just leave it bolted up.

As mentioned earlier, this cost about $55-60 to make and has the drop down needed for the exhaust on the newer duramax. I made it 98" wide which gives me about 1 1/2" beyond the tires on each side. If a person bought a bed mat or two tailgate mats, you could go all the way across and avoid the gap in the center, but I haven't seen a need for that....yet.

Definitely something that we need. We have a couple of mods in our heads, and something like that will be one.
