Went on a 4000 mile trip from TX to Arches NP, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain NP, Great Sand Dunes NP, and back to TX. The current truck pulled the fiver just fine - it is well within the "towing" weight. And between the Tow/Haul mode and the engine brake it stopped it just fine (hardly had to use the brakes at all going down hills).

Two things were in my favor - It never rained on us while pulling the trailer, and we had no panic stops.

However, there was a high wind advisory as we traveled north through Utah - we got back yesterday and I went down to the ford dealer and ordered a F450 this afternoon.

I'm also looking forward to having a long bed. I have kissed the cab with the fiver more times than I would like to admit. At least the only damage so far has been some rubbed off paint.

Oh! and a 48 gallon fuel tank. Whoever designed the short bed super duty to have a 26 gallon fuel tank must have had a really small bladder.

Now to wait and see when it actually arrives. I still haven't been able to drive one - the dealer said I could have my deposit back if I don't like the way the truck feels.

Congrats on that new truck! I leave from Houston tomorrow for an 18 day trip to Glacier NP. We will hit Bozeman, Yellowstone (Jackson, WY), Grand Tetons and Pegosa Springs, CO on the way back. Looking forward to July 4th in Jackson, WY!

Most travel days are 6 hrs.....but I do have 2 days closer to 8 hrs. 3 days in a row in Glacier....6 days in Jackson.

This is our 2nd long trip with the F350 DRW and the 41ft 5th Wheel (Avalanche 396BH). Hope we have a great trip like you did. We have brand new tires and newly installed TPMS....

Sounds like you have a fun trip planned.

I put a TST 507 on the Cougar just before we left. It was amazing how much peace of mind it gave me. I didn't realise how much I worried about the tires before.

On edit: when I reread my post it sounded like I meant that the dealer wouldn’t give the money back. What was intended is you won’t WANT your money back.

I wouldnt upgrade for thoes numbers. the GC is more a braking preformace limit but our trailers have brakes so it doesnt come into effect. unless for some reason I am misunderstanding that. what the copes up here go by is the individual alex weights and the tire ratings.

Just another of those opinions.... we talked of trading down from our 2019 450 to a 250 or 350 before we actually pulled our little camper, thinking it might be hard to get enough tongue weight. Quickly found out we are keeping the 450 happily. The stopping power makes a big diff to the hubs who does most of the driving. (We know all the reasons not to trade in "this economy" but were just toying with it....)

Ordered in June and picked up yesterday. Went from a payload on my 250 of 2112 to a payload on the 450 of 4979. I think I’m good now.


On a side note. I was a bit worried about ordering a new color that I hadn’t seen yet, but I am very pleased with the atlas blue.

Beautiful truck, you gave up about 500# of payload compared to an F350 for a more stout truck. Not a bad trade off.

I haven’t actually gotten to drive it yet (just got out of the hospital again - a bad case of COVID is no joke) Just watching my wife drive it the turning radius alone is worth the 500# hit. She did a u turn that I wouldn’t have made in my short bed 250 let alone a regular long bed truck.

And the ride is actually smoother than my 2016 f250. Some of that my be that I had the tires aired all the up to the max for towing but I had multiple people tell me that the 19.5 tires on the 450 will make it ride really rough. I have not found that to be the case. It has only been two days and two short trips but I have to say I am incredibly pleased with this truck.

If you have to wonder about the price you likely can afford one. Truck prices right now are silly high and when the bottom drops out, they will still be more than this ol' boy can afford. Will stick with my clunker and just admire the new trucks members are buying.

Ordered it back in June. Paid MSRP with no dealer mark up. That was the agreement I had with the dealer at the time of order. Did I pay too much - probably but I was too overloaded in my previous truck to truly be a comfortable towing experience so it was either upgrade or park the trailer.

Besides, every time I go outside and look at it I get a huge grin on my face. Some things are just worth the money.

I just left the Ford site and loaded a F450 with everything possible, including $1,695 shipping, and came up with $102,365. In fact I loaded so much 'stuff' that the payload is probably down to about 850 pounds... I'd say $100K used would be a little harsh. Although a friend/acquaintance is a GMC salesman and he tells sad, sad stories about how low all the sales employee's checks are right now at his dealership. Just plain nothing to sell.

We’ve had our 2017 2500HD for a couple years now. It’s now at 70,000 miles…nada estimate is $1k more than we paid for it. ($53k…it was right at $70k msrp new)

(So yeah, you could ‘sell it for what we paid for it,’ but that ignores the taxes and extra stuff we’ve added to it.)

That is considerably more than I paid. A Lariat Ultimate sounds fancy but in reality is right in the middle of the trim levels anymore. I certainly didn’t get a King Ranch or Platinum or Limited. I also didn’t heavily option it.

Our 34' RV/race trailer and truck comes in at 21,460. Truck is 7510 so trailer is 13,950. 2020 7.3L gas F-350 XLT DRW average 7.6 MPG running 65~70 with that load.

Waiting on new 2022 DRW F-350 Lariat

why the Lariat? More stuff with less packages. 4x2, 7.3L, DRW Crew, Lariat Ultimate, Ultimate Trailer Tow, 5th/goose prep. $63,600 build and price, not really that much more than trying to load out an XLT. But at the Lariat level you get Sync 4, memory pedals/mirrors, leather seats, dual zone AC, wireless charger in the console, power outlets, Box Link, tailgate step, box lighting. Yes the leather seats are kinda foo-foo, but hey - I'm 65. I earned my foo-foo butt cushions. And heated seats are a must for her and me both. Oh my aching back.

We had hella equity in the 2020 when offered a trade price - so now I'm driving a 1993 F-350 DRW 460 waiting on my new super truck.

PS - price compare, wife's new XLT loaded F-150 with 360 cams, Ultimate trailer, heated seats, 3.5L twin turbo, etc was $51K.
