Gettysburg

We're in Ohio and planning a trip to Gettysburg via I-70 & I76, the return trip is the trip of question.

Has anyone run I-81 South to Winchester and then picked up Highway 50 West to Ohio?

I was wondering if 50 West has shoulders and a pleasant drive? We're pulling a 35' 5th wheel.

Thanks,
David

Route 50 thru WV to Clarksburg is a twisting, steep, mountainous road. Beutiful scenery but not with something attached behind you.

To my knowledge there's only two major routes that cross the Allegheny mountians in WV that's decent for the uninitiated towing. Take aRt 68 in MD west or Rt 66 west in VA. Both will cross the mountians with divided highways at "reasonable" grades. There are a fouple of other partial routes that were never completed and you end up in mountians with minimal shoulders that are typically deeply rutted from coal and timber trucks dropping off the asphalt and very minimal guide rails to prevent a "free fall " off the side of the mountian.

68 is looking to be the likely route, thx again

When I lived in the Maryland area, we took a bike trip across Hwy 50 through WVa and into Ohio and I would never recommend someone pulling a trailer. Hairpins and big steep elevation changes come to mind on a narrow 2 lane. I think US40 goes across doesn't it?

David, my wife is from Frostburg, Maryland so we have travelled all those routes many, many times. We both would recommend a return trip of I-68 and I-79 if for no other reason than scenery. You've got the truck and the horses to do it, why not. Your only long pull worth serious discussion will be westbound from Cumberland to Midlothian, maybe an eight mile pull, certainly not something your beast can't handle.
The interstate slows down to 30 MPH through the bridge in Cumberland, and when you see the mountain ahead just pick up your speed and rock on.

I-68 goes right through downtown Cumberland MD such as it is.
We have a way smaller rig but the Cumberland shopping center has a huge parking lot and we took a walk break last time we were through there.

Cumberland is a whole town dedicated to artsy, fa**sy crafts and such.
Kinda like a disorganized Berea KY if you are into that kind of thing.

We got off I-68 and let google direct us to the shopping center and had no problems with clearances.
However, YMMV.
We have a small TT just so we can do this kinda thing.

I70 and I68 replaced US 40. You can see a lot of US 40 winding alongside as it climbs over the hills. Had grandparents that lived in Morgantown, WV so know the road well. Also had an aunt and cousins that lived in Salem, WV (west of Clarksburg, WV) and I would drive in at night across Rt 50 to visit. Why at night? Young, single, and stupid I'd run that road at high speed like it was the Nuremberg track.

Linux, I suppose I should PM you rather than put this here, but if you ever have time, visit the C and O Canal Visitor's Center and Museum downtown Cumberland. And a short walk away is the ever infamous "Curtis Coney Island Famous Wieners," same place since 1918.
The old towpath alongside the former canal is still very active for cyclists, being an integral part of the Great Allegheny Passage Trail, I believe about 330 miles from Pittsburgh to Washington DC.

Thanks, we did go to the Visitor's Center and Museum.
We also biked the tunnel and trail from beautiful Paw Paw WV.

Well, I think I mentioned I hadn't lived in Maryland for almost 30 years. My dim recollection was that Interstate 40 was a fairly new highway. Seems ya'll have more money for roadbuilding that we poor Texans do.

George, he's talking about US 40, but believe me, Marylanders DO have more money to do stuff. Hell, they even tax the rain along with everything else that either moves or doesn't!

I 81 South

I 81 South is very busy with 18 wheelers from Harrisburg on down to Tennessee where it ends. That’s where I drive it. If they don’t bother you that’s fine, but I don’t even like to make that drive in a car let alone pulling a TT. Anyway, one of my least favorite stretches of road in the east.

The Virginia Inland Port near Front Royal, VA is a very busy place. https://www.portofvirginia.com/facil...land-port-vip/

It's been a while since I was there but I81 was rutted very bad from the trucks. Hopefully it's been repaved since I was there. I 81 is also a favorite road of the State Police so speed is strictly enforced.

I81 south is a clean ride except for 18 wheelers.
I64 West thru WVA is beautiful, less traveled and less dangerous pulling trailer.
Leads right into Ohio all good road.
We turned right at Nitro and went north thru Chillicothe. Nice drive.
