spindle nut torque specs help

Hi all,

Running a D44 Drexel axle with e-z lube bearings. While greasing the bearing, I noticed the wheel had a bit more side-to-side movement than I think is normal.

Before I tear apart the whole thing, I would like to see if it is only a loose spindle nut, as opposed to worn bearings.

Does anyone know what/if there is a torque spec for the spindle nut?

Thanks in advance!

From the Dexter website

-57-For E-Z Lube® axles using the new nut retainer:
1. After placing the hub, bearings, washers, and spindle nut back on the axle spindle in reverse order as detailed in the previous section on hub removal, rotate the hub assembly slowly while tightening the spindle nut to approximately 50 Ft. Lbs. (12" wrench or pliers with full hand force.)
2. Then loosen the spindle nut to remove the torque. Do not rotate the hub.
3. Finger tighten the nut until just snug, align the retainer to the machined flat on the spindle and press the retainer onto the nut. The retainer should snap into place. Once in place, the retainer/nut assembly should be free to move slightly.
4. If the nut is too tight, remove the retainer and back the nut off approximately one twelfth of a turn and reinstall the retainer. The nut should now be free to move slightly.
5. Reinstall grease cap.

tech 740 is spot on, I might add the only way to inspect the bearings and races is to take the hub off, clean them, then inspect. If you are not familiar as to what to look for, the Dexter hand book is a good source as is Timken on line.

Always replace the seals, and have a marvelous 4th.

Personally I would NEVER use the EZ lube, tear apart & hand pack only. This gives you a good inspection of all parts/pieces & won't allow over greasing, blowing the seal & filling brake drums with grease.
IMHO if you've used the EZ lube more than once that you tear them down & #1 find out why the play side to side & #2 make sure the brakes aren't filled with grease.
The factory grease seals are pieces of crap & if you tear it apart you'll need to replace the seals every time anyway.
