Water heater trouble

I have been using propane to heat the hot water on our 2011 Keystone Residence with no trouble. Today i heard the burner start up run for about 1 minute then shut down it would light again after short time but shut down again. This kept happening over and over so I switched over to electric and cleaned out the burner tube and combustion chamber with air. Lots of rust a crap came outs i tried it again but it still keeps shutting down . Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? The heater is a Suburban.

Thanks

Hi,

First off,.... do you have adequate propane supply? Do other propane appliances work (fridge, stove top)? If no,... switch to the other propane tank and re-try. If yes,......

then,.... when a propane appliance lights,... there is a component called a Thermocoupler whose job it is ,... is to tell the unit that the flame is lite and continuing to supply propane is safe. Think of it as a "flame is Ok gadget". If the flame is not Ok for some reason,... like no flame,... it causes the unit to shut off the propane to avoid a fire.

If this part has failed, it will demonstrate the symptoms you describe.

Open the door to the water heater as you did when cleaning.... where the flame would be during normal operation,... see if you have a small component that looks like a ceramic base with a wire that projects into where the flame would be (this is the Thermocoupler)... try and clean rust off of it and retry.

May need to replace it,....

With the door open,... turn on the water heater on propane,.... what does the flame in the burner look like... even and flowing? Sometimes spiders will build a web in the burner orifice causing the flame to not be even and flowing.

Please report back your findings.
