Portable heaters

I'm looking for for a portable heater for an early April trip. I want to use it instead of running the furnace. I see there is lots of options and opinions, so what are you guys using in you trailers?

We use oil filled radiators since our furry friends go with us.

If you use ceramic heaters make sure you don't exceed the capacity of the circuit it's plugged into.

During the cold season I carry a propane heater that runs off the small bottles. No electric required ...

The oil filled are the safest for small areas, don't have to worry about something coming in contact and starting a fire. Years ago, when in Michigan, we used one in the front and one in the back, kept the trailer very warm and didn't have to worry about the kids getting burned or starting a fire.

I have a couple of these, ceramic heaters

They put out a lot of heat, have 2 heat settings and are very quiet.

They were $24 each, at amazon

I have one these for the bedroom and rotates back and forth and the case stays cool and no exposed heating coils. The heater in the link below and the fake fireplace keep our 39.5 foot 5er warm in 27 degree over night stay

We use a Vornado TVH600. It is pricy but is not hot to the touch, is extremely quite, moves the air around the TT very well so there are no cold spots and the temp is monitored wherever the remote is located.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Vornado-T...6-46/202364083

BTW: I added a separate receptacle and plug to be able to run the heater directly off the campground's 15 amp receptacle on the pedestal. This way I do not run high amperage for the heater through the TT's electrical system. Here are a few pictures of what I did: http://www.keystonerv.org/forums/album.php?albumid=699

We are not fans of most electric heat, afraid of the fire danger but we did pick up an oil filled one last season to use during the day and help same some propane.

No sure that I would use an unvented propane heater inside.

I use one of these, it has high and low voltage and it rotates. I used to have oil heaters but it was always too hot or too cold

Our trailer is 24 X 8 in the living section giving us a total of 192 sq feet of space, less all the appliances, furniture etc. We use a "Heat-Wave" fan heater, Model PTC-905 (EB38956). This is a small lightweight heater that has two settings, 6.5 Amp at low and 12.5 Amps at high 1500 Watts. Adjustable temperature switch, switches off in the event of overheating, tip over switch. Purchased from WalMart, have seen in many stores, about $18 to $20.00 bucks. We have used ours for about a year, has worked well. Very seldom run furnace as the heater keeps the trailer warm and uses free electricity as part of the cost of our sights.

Ive had this 1 for a couple years now and like it alot. Wanted a small, compact reliable heater for those spring/fall chilly nights, while not using up my propane for the furnace. I do set it up on the counter so its away from the dogs.
Also found out the hard wat that it takes all night to heat up a cold camper. But I now have the furnace get it to temp and this little heater will hold it the rest of the night.

One thing for I know about boondocking the central heat blower will kill batteries over night . When i got home I'm going to install this. http://www.campingworld.com/shopping...y-heater/19333 it will mount right behind the sink on the back side and plumb into the stove.

All depends on HOW you decide to camp. I have used a vent-less that was
in the used TT that I used to live in. It was a back-up for the regular heater
and the previous owners used to boondock along the Wasatch Plateau.
With this 5er I have an oil filled that I use during the Spring and Fall to help
cut back on my propane usage. The one that I currently have is;
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Honeywell-...ingMethod=p13n
Works fine, has 2 settings and I've never (so far), used the higher one.
Keeps the interior very comfortable.

I have one of the little boxy ceramic heaters and it keeps the trailer just fine at night. Don't see any danger in it. We have two dogs and the heater on the floor. They ignore it. Even if they layed right up against it I don't think anything would go wrong. You can put your hand right against it and it isn't too hot.

im interested in getting one of these recommended but to be honest I cant seem to use up my propane bottles as it is. my furnace literally blows me out and the fan cycling on is a soothing to sleep to. My fireplace definitely keeps the chill off but the bedroom area will get cooler if all I do is run the fireplace.

Cool idea. I was going add that for boondocking, most of the products or suggestions in this thread wouldn't work so my suggestion would have been to pick up a Mr. Heater (Buddy series). They runs on the small propane bottles (or directly to a 20 lb. cylinder with optional hose and filter) and is safe for indoors. Heck, I have friends that use them in tents. You can get the small one for generally under 100 bucks and it puts out 4,000-9,000 BTU's which is enough to heat up 200 square feet. I'm going to get one for the garage on my Carbon toy hauler since the single heater vent in there does pretty much nothing.

My cold weather camping in January was easier than I expected. Had temps down to 15 overnight. I had 2 drop lights (trouble lights) with 75 watt bulbs in the storage bay. Had all 3 storage bay lights on as well. I had the fireplace on all the time except 1 warm afternoon. I had the furnace set at 58-60. The first day I had a ceramic heater also. I used an electric blanket too. When I got home I saw the propane tanks never switched. I refilled one bottle and had used only half of it over 7 days.

OP, you didn't say if you wanted gas or electric. I bought a Vornado MVH whole room electric heater for my 30' trailer with front bed/rear bunks. It is virtually silent, very safe, and works unbelievably well to keep a uniform temperature. I highly recommend it.

I have the Wave 8, the bigger version. Loved it in our old camper and kept it when I sold it. It is silent and really puts out heat--easily kept our 22' hybrid camper warm in cool nights.

Now that I have the new X-Lite, I will be doing a mod to add it in. I will post up here or in its own thread when I do so. I will try to T in to the back side of the furnace like one popular RV blog site showed, but I won't know how feasible that will be until I start pulling access panels.
