Which Tire?

Ok I'm sure it's been asked and answered before but I'm replacing the China Bombs with either the Goodyear Endurance ST @ $722.58 or the Big O brand National Road Max XT @ $560.46

The trailer doesn't go on 1000 mile trips and sits more then rolls. $212 bucks is $212 bucks! Input?

Never heard of Big O. I would go with the Goodyears between the two. You might look at Carlisle HD as well.

If you're an Escapees RV member, the Goodyear are 15% cheaper if you buy through their website. Installation is usually cheaper too. You pick the installer near you, they ship directly to them and arrive in a couple days.

Your tires don't know the difference between 100 miles and 10,000 miles. One recent post was a member reporting his tire blew apart 3 miles after leaving his house. I'm guessing that if the "Big O" tires fail and do a couple of thousand in damage your deductible would be more than the price difference.

Big O Tire is a chain that either bought out National Tire and Battery (NTB) I believe. I have no knowledge of their house label tires but that is generally what they run sales on. I use Carlisle Radial Trail HD ST225/75R15 because they are a lot less than the Goodyears and I can recall their Marathon offerings which were not so good. Goodyear still hasn't built up sufficient trust in me for me to consider them over what I know has worked for me in the past.

The China RV trailer tire builders are very receptive to the wants of USA distributors. They will just change the tire sidewall mold to any name wanted. Get the plant code off the tire sidewall and see where they were built. With a little researching you'll probably find that a dozen or more brand names are built on the same production line.

You have your reason for distrusting Goodyear but I have around 10K mi on my Endurance tires, bought in 18, so far not one problem

Have you been around since Goodyear sold the Marathon line? If so, you might be a Carlisle tire owner now as well. I am sure they learned their lesson and are now making fine tires and I salute you for spending the extra bucks and buying American! I will stick with Carlisle for a few more sets until the Endurance line has a chance to show its merit.

I'm just wondering how Big O came into an RV tire conversation? You got the Carlisles, Goodyears etc.; both very trustworthy brands and then......Big O???

Never been around Big O much. Had a store in a town down the mountain from our vacation home. Saw a few folks with Big O tires, always looked sort of..?? Talked to a couple up in the mountains that had them and their reason for buying? Not that they were good....they were cheap. Tried to have work done there twice and it was like "holy cow Matilda, run for the hills".

Anyway, I'd definitely look at the Carlisles and forget the Big O brand - no since spending good money to "hope". JMO

If saving $212 is your motivation, you might consider this:

If your trailer tires are 225 75R15 LRE (10 ply), and the cost of Big O tires is 560.46, you might want to look at Carlisle Radial Trail HD in the same size at WalMart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Carlisle-...-Tire/55012166

At $85.99 each, 4 will cost you $343.96 Mount/balance/road hazard is $25 per tire, so a total of $443.96 plus sales tax. You can order them online, have them delivered to your store to be mounted on your wheels.

And, instead of 450 stores in 25 states, there's a WalMart in every "civilized population center greater than 15,000 people for thousands of places to get service.

That would save you another "hundred" over your $212..... YMMV

I’m liking my choice to go with Carlisles on my rig after doing my research. YMMV.
In the end, all tires brands can and may fail.

Just out of curiosity I used their search feature on the Big O site and didn't see any in Texas.
I have heard of NTB.
Just go to WalMart.com and order their Carlisle HD's.

Sears created the brand in 1997 by consolidating the Tire America (TA) and National Tire Warehouse (NTW) brands, adding the "B" to include its DieHard brand of batteries.[2] Sears original acquired both Tire America and National Tire Warehouse in 1988 when it acquired its then parent Western Auto Supply.[3]

In 2003, Sears sold the brand, which consisted mostly of stores set apart from its name brand stores, to TBC Corporation. A Sears spokesman said "Because of the separate branding and the lack of proximity to our retail operations, we weren't able to drive growth like a TBC could".[1] The chain of 226 stores was reported to have brought in $425 million in revenue and $60 million in profit in 2002.[1]

TBC Corporation includes Tire Kingdom, Merchant’s Tire and Auto Centers and Big O Tire stores. Together they operate more than 1,200 locations in 41 states Washington DC, Alberta & British Columbia, Canada.[4]

I had trailer kings on my 5er 28sgs cougar put over 20000 on them just replaced them with endurance 225/75 /15 there tread looks shallow but the side walls are really thicker , iwas shocked when i took the trailer kings off and seen how thin the side walls were. only time will tell on the goodyear tires

I would suggest you ensure that what ever ST tires you buy say that they have a "layer" or "Ply" on Nylon under the tread as the GY Endurance does.

Safety first.

I, too, agree to go with the better tire. I replaced the China Bombs on our Springdale with Carlisle HD's.. We noticed a difference the first time we used them. They my be less expensive than Goodyear.

Big O has serviced my 2 Expeditions, 2 Camry's, 1 Honda, 1 Ram, 1 Jayco, 1 Prowler and now my Cougar. After speaking to some locals using the National I decided to go that route. They appear to be well made and anythings better then the china bomb. At the end of the day they should age out before they wear out.

Certainly a track record is important, but I recently had a tire salesman demonstrate the difference between a Carlisle and Goodyear. He stood both side-by-side and pushed down on them. I pushed down on them too. The sidewall strength of the Goodyear is amazing. My choice.

My Montana came with the ST235/80R16 China Bombs (max load rated at 3,420 per tire) made by Trailer King. After 6,664 miles I blew a tire on the driver side of the RV. Before I got to my final location to research and replace the complete set of tires, a week later I blew one on the passenger side after 7,188 miles. Thank the Lord that I had insurance to repair the $5,000 plus of damages to the RV. I did my research comparing the tires available to me and chose to replace all 4 tires with the Goodyear Endurance tire because they are now manufactured in the US with great QC. One thing I did to keep the E rated wheels, I upgraded the size to the ST255/85R16 that are rated at 4,080 lbs per tire. My GVWR is 16,715 lbs. If you consider the pin weight of 2,735 lbs, then the tires need to support 13,980 lbs. I increased the total tire rating from 13,680 lbs to 16,320. I now have 6,395 miles on my Endurance tires, which ride smoother, the handling is much improved and am more comfortable with the US tire on my Montana.
