Both of the batteries have a battery disconnect switch which I turn and usually remove the key when it is in storage. I did not remove it this time.

Which brings up a new question: what is the purpose of the disconnect switch? Is it a factory option or aftermarket (I know I am not providing a lot of information about it, just a red T handle that has a metal piece that goes into a hole).

I'll get a picture of it and post it here.

I am considering getting a battery pack to take and run the jacks with so I can pick up the trailer and bring it home. Is there any reason NOT to do that?

I really wish I had some type of users manual for my trailer.
Also pairing a new battery with an old one is not a good idea. The older weaker battery will cannibalize the new battery severely shortening its lifespan. Always replace batteries in pairs of exact same battery.

Just to confirm, the factory battery disconnect with the key, is worthless (all that I’m aware of) . They normally only disconnect about 1/2 the stuff. Smoke and co2 detectors, sometimes jacks, lights and trailer brakes stay on. Never use ours, the battery will be dead in about 10 days.

We installed a full disconnect right off the battery, 100% disconnect. Use it when the rig is not in use. Since it powers the emergency trailer brakes, it must be on while traveling.

The disconnect isn't a true disconnect since it leaves various things on. I have never used those I've had since they just don't accomplish anything IMO. I installed a true disconnect on the last trailer at the battery and never worried about the disconnect. The only time I did was when it decided to go bad just sitting there and I had to replace it. Since then I just keep the RV plugged in 7/24/365 unless rolling and then it's "plugged in" to the truck.

In your case leaving the trailer for several months and (I'm assuming) no shore power I would pull them, take them home and put them on tenders. I've got 2 brand new ones sitting at the barn unopened but that doesn't do you any good...
