Hot Water Tank Fumes/Soot

I have a 2007 3500RL. My wife and I were out camping last weekend and I noticed a smell outside. I walked around the camper and it was coming from the hot water tank. Not only did it smell, there was a black soot streak going up the side of the camper. Are there any adjustments that I can make to the tank to keep it from burning rich?

Sounds like it needs a cleaning. Perhaps insects moved in. Spiderweb does not burn away and they seem to like the smell of gas.

Clean the large "U" shaped burn tube first. Spiders like to nest in there.

If that doesn't work, then the air mix tube may need cleaning or adjustment or both.

Sounds to me like the gas valve may have failed and does not completely shut down. Hopefully it is just bugs. The valve is not cheap.
