GA Taxes

Getting ready to pull the trigger on a new 5th wheel from a dealer in AL, but was wondering if I'll have to pay the GA property tax when my birthday comes around in Feb. I know GA bases property tax on who owns the vehicle on 01 Jan each year.

Q: Should I wait until 02 Jan to purchase or buy it before the end of Dec?

Thanks!

I would recommend that you buy it when you want to buy it. What I have found after owning homes and property in 2 states, there are very good at figuring the tax bill that you owe. If you think you have come up with anyway to beat the system, I think it will not work.
That advice is from someone who has no GA tax law knowledge. Maybe call/email them and ask that question and learn how much you will owe if purchased on either date.

why would you pay property tax on a RV property tax is for stick and brick home? you have to pay sales tax for your state.

Where are you going to register it? Wherever it is registered is where you will pay tax I'm sure. I am assuming you are talking property tax vs sales tax. I have "property" (land/buildings) in several states and pay "property" taxes on them in the respective states. I have "personal property" (cars/boats/etc) registered in 2 states; neither has a personal property tax. I have lived in a state that did have a "personal property" tax and they taxed anything you owned right down to silverware - it was a horrendous nightmare and I left the 2nd year.

If you miss one year of personal property tax on the RV if purchased after Jan 1 it might make sense to hold off if that tax rate is enough to worry about.

Check with the 2 state"s tax divisions. I purchased my sig truck in PA and live in MD. Only paid the sales tax in MD. VA considers any motor vehicle, boat, motorcycle, and RV as "real property" and taxes it yearly.

I don't live in GA, but my daughter does and she complains every year that her vehicle tags come due on her birthday and they are pretty high and based on the actual value of the vehicle, I'm assuming that is what the OP is referring to.

Thanks for the information. Yes GA does charge personal property tax for RVs based on the value and who owns it on 01 Jan each year. That’s in addition to sales tax at time of purchase. My last pull behind camper costs me about $500 per yr
I think I need to retire in FL soon lol

None

I live in GA and I don’t pay property tax on an RV. It’s parked here.
You will still pay some GA sales tax after buying in AL and bringing to GA to register it.

We don't pay personal property tax on RV's in Oregon, and registrations are good for two years and due the same month you purchased. So if you have multiple vehicles you can stagger when the registration is due.
