Toilet additive

Does anyone have experience using Rid-X in there toilet/black tank? It has been recommended to me, but before I use it I thought I would check with ya'll. Thanks.

There are a multitude of additives for RV tanks. It comes down to personal choice. They all work to some extent. We use Dawn dish soap and Calgon. Cheap and it works for us.

Since that is a monthly emsyn additive for a septic system, I'd have to ask... how long are you going to wait to dump... A week is about all we get on our 38 gallon tank before it becomes mandatory.

As stated most black tanks are only around 40 gallons, these are holding tanks. I also think these septic tank emsyns will not be in your holding tank long enough to be effective. But it definely will help the campsite septic system. Have tried chemicals but over the last year have been just using Downy, but will try Dawn

I have tried many commercial products with mixed results. Last year I went to the GEO method of calgon and dawn soap, couldn't be happier. If you get a smell just add some bleach to the tank. This is the only method I recommend.

I couldn't figure out what an Emsyn was and then I figured it out, Enzyme. I use the Camco packs that are formaldehyde free and dissolve quickly from Wal-Mart. Seem to work, but overall we don't let the tank sit too long with "stuff" in it. I bag last us about a year, we don't get out enough.

Rid-X in the home septic system and Dawn in the trailer holding tank. Septic tank and holding tank are two different animals.

Thanks all. Good information. I'll stick with Dawn plus something for the scent.

I've used the Rid-X for about a year. I've been happy with it so far. Just don't add bleach. It will kill all the beneficial microbes/enzymes your adding with the Rid-X.

A couple questions here. 1. What is the mix of Dawn & Calgon, or do you just dump what feels good down the loo? 2. Does anyone use additives in gray tanks?

Nothing needed in gray tanks. If you have bad sensor readings in gray tank, try this:
Run water heater (with water in it of course) until temp is reached. Fill kitchen sink with HOT water and pour 1/4 bottle of Ultra Dawn into it. Pull plug and run hot water until it gets lukewarm. And then finish filling with both hot and cold knobs open. I've had 100% success.

With Dawn for my 38 gallon tank I add 4 or 5 good shots from the squeeze bottle... just think of it as a big sink and how much would you use...

Never have used the Calgon... never felt the need .

Don't really use anything in the grey tank but will occasionally pour a cup of bleach in the galley tank... helps with the food residue that inevitably gets washed down the drain...

Once or twice a year after dumping I'll put a few shots of Dawn in both grey tanks and the black with 5 gallons of water for the tow home, then fill and dump after I get home.

Something to take into consideration along with odor control and "cleanliness" (if you can make a black tank clean) is lubrication of the rubber dump valve seals. If you're using Calgon (or another softening agent) it will help, if you're only using Dawn, there isn't anything to help condition the seals. I'd suggest either a commercial "valve seal lubricant" or, if you look up "EVOO" or "Extra Virgin Olive Oil" on the forum, you'll find some "quite humorous" posts to help with recipes for your salad dressing.... But, olive oil does help condition and preserve the valve seals. Just add a quarter cup (or so) of EVOO to the tank after dumping along with your favorite "tank dressing".... The EVOO will work its way to the rubber seals, coating them and helping the blade open and close easier.

Funny you should mention the seals. I have a jug of coconut oil for them.
