recomendations for Eastern IA, NW IL, SW WI & SE MN

My wife and I are new to the area and would like to get a list of potential campgrounds for 2-3 night weekend trips in the area. It's just the 2 of us and our new toy hauler has a generator so we would not necessarily need to have hookups. We enjoy nature trails and during the day we like to head out on our Goldwing that we will bring with us.

Thanks, Craig

I've been watching your post because we are close by and also new to this travel trailer thing. We've done the hiking/tent thing but never from a campground.

I've done the search for "WI" and "Wisconsin" in this section of the forum and came up with a few. We live near the Dells so we try to stay away from that area at all costs.

Anybody have ideas for campgrounds that are less populated?

Hawkeye, check out Governor Dodge State Park here in WI. Two lakes to paddle around in, woods and lots of hiking trails.

hawkeyestoob, I grew up in DeWitt (just north of Davenport), loved going to Northeastern Iowa for the trout fishing. Now I live in Houston, sure miss the trout fishing, nothing finer.

Stay in Perrot State Park, and ride the Driftless region.

Thanks for the link to Perrot State Park and the driftless area rides. Those are exactly what I am looking for.

I am wondering if you know how much they stick to the requirement that even motorcycles need to display park stickers in Wisconsin? I am not liking the idea of turning my motorcycle into a sticker collection. I am used to the state parks in Nebraska where you could keep the sticker in your saddlebags.

Can't really answer the sticker ? and the enforcement, but i would think in the bag you'd be fine. I'm sure they have some common sense...... If you head this way let me know, and I'll try and map quest you some county roads to ride that connect or run you with the must do rides. You have to ride the Mindoro 108 Cut, and wildcat mountain, but there are some very good county roads to ride in this neck of the woods the suggested route's linked above have a lot of highways bypassing some great roods.

I like many of the Iowa State Parks, Pikes Peak, Clear Lake and Lake MacBride.

A couple of nice county parks are Hickory Hills in Tama and Big Woods in Black Hawk and Volga River State Recreation Area in Fayette, counties.

I also like the COE campground at Coralville.

Feel free to shot me a personal message if you have questions.

If you have a large RV just be aware that Lake MacBride has an entrance to the campground that is very tight. I couldn't make in there going the right way. Had to circle around and come in the exit. I lost a sewer vent cap and scraped the roof there.
