Adding 30A shore power receptacle

Hi All... So, I'm adding a new 30A receptacle, so I can plug in, at my house. Fortunately, the main panel is only 3' away. My question is, is 12ga sufficient, or do I need 10ga wire (or heavier?) to install my new receptacle? Thanks in advance! Hoef

You might check the electrical code in your area, in this part of Michigan, for 30 amp, 110 service, less than 50' run calls for 8 gage, over 50 and less than 125 calls for 6 gage Romex. 220 runs are different, so check your local electrical codes.

Hoef,, first of all check your code. Then use at least the 8 gauge. Remember, it is available by the foot at the big box stores and the cost won't even enter into the equation.

Home wired things run the gamut. Do yours right. Check code and comply. Typically, if I recall, NEC calls for at least a 10ga copper conductor to carry 30 amps. Go with the code or 8 ga. to be safe. Distance is a big factor but you said about 3' to the panel. If you've only worked with 12/14ga. wire understand that 8 ga. is "fun" to work with (6ga is even "better")

#10 ia ample for 30A. Any requirement for a larger wire is going to be a local code,not NEC.
