50 amp Surge suppresor

I am new to the whole 50amp service in our new TT, our old TT had 30amp service and we never had a problem.. Now that we have 50amp TT I am more worried about electrical damage due to miswired campground service and power surges when the electricity goes out.. I am looking at the Technology Research 44270 Surge Guard 50 Amp Surge Protector and the Progressive Industries SSP50 Smart Surge.. I am leaning towards the Progressive SSP50 due to some of the things I have read about the Smart Guard.. What is eveyones thoughts on these models? Please feel free to share and positive or negative experiences with either model?

I have progressive surge protector its hard wired. haven't had any problems yet with any wiring at rv parks but I have It just in case. Mine also has readout that tell me the amps I'm pulling so far I like the unit I bought. the reason I bought the hard wire is there is no chance it would be stolen, and it got good reviews.

I also have a Progressive industries hard wired unit and love it. Installation wasn't too difficult and having a remote amp readout sure is nice when getting use to the loads in a TT.

I too have the Progressive Industries 50 amp hardwired remote readout unit and enjoy the peace of mind it gives me. However, mine was a PIA to install, only because I had to lie on my back in the cubby hole to do it. The wiring is straight forward, but bending those six gauge wires can be problematic. I wired mine before the transfer switch simply because I did not have concerns with the generator as a power source, and I could use the generator if the surge protector failed.

We just bought a new th and r scheduled for pickup in a couple weeks. Thinking of having dealer install one of these progressive industries before we pick up. Sounds like many on here prefer that brand?

It sounds like the Progressive is the one to go with.. I read somewhere that if you use the hardwired version it will void your factory warranty? Yes 6 gauge wire is a PIA to work with, my brother and I have already wired up my garage for 50amp TT service..

Many of us have Surge Guard surge protectors and EMS systems. I have also researched different protection systems

http://www.keystonerv.org/forums/showthread.php?t=15527

As far as trust in your generator, I started testing systems for the upcoming trip. Started up the ONAN 5500 and after a while wondered why I did not hear the microwave beep. NO 120 VAC then noticed an error on the surge guard monitor HIGH VOLTAGE ---- L1 137 VAC The Surge Guard had disabled 120 VAC power to the RAPTOR. I shut down generator and opened it up, looked around and did not notice anything obvious. Restarted generator with no further power issues . I will be looking into this further.

Without this protection the Raptor would have been powered with 137 VAC until something happened to catch my attention So I am not sure how comfortable you should feel with your generator

And YES, I am happy with my Surge Guard.

There is a big difference between a surge protector and a voltage monitor with surge protection. You really want the latter. It will cost you 3-400 dollars for a 50 amp voltage monitor. Your link is for a surge protector only. Read up on the difference. I went with a Progressive Industries hard wired voltage monitor with remote display. Much more convenient then walking outside to read the monitor and then worrying about theft too.
