Use the porch light

I posted a thread with pics, by using the poch light as junction box and adding a few switches from radio shack you don't have to drill hole in trailer. It also makes remote controll work better.

I bought a 5M (16') 5050 SMED white only LED off ebay for <$20. Ran it just below the retracted awning and down the side of the rear awning bracket to illuminate the door. Doesn't have a controller, I just ran some 20 ga wire up the front awning support from the front storage and tied into the LED lighting and waterproofed it. Had a 12V rocker switch lying around the garage, got 12V power from the light in the front storage and tied it all together. Pic attached.
Lights appear to be brighter in photo than they actually are. DW likes it, thinks I'm a rocket surgeon.

So these showed up in the mail today. They work and do way more things then I wanted them to do! Not bad for $15.00.

I've been through several LED light strips that claimed to be waterproof or IP-67. They all eventually had multiple LEDs go out due to moisture getting in from the "tape" side. The last strip I bought is IP-68 and is completely encased in clear rubber coating. I had to install it using cable ties and tabs because tape would not stick to it. They have been through a lot of wet weather and are holding up much better than others(no bad LEDs or milky haze). I found them on eBay for $28. A little more than the others, but a much better product.

They plugged right in to the previous LED setup I had. Not sure if you can order just the box and adapter by itself. My setup plugs into a 12v socket behind the tv in the room, and runs through a hole I made in the wall, to the strip. You can buy the 5M 5050 LED non waterproof kits for about $18 on eBay and use your(waterproof) strip. It uses the same 4 prong plug.

I got around to installing the strip lights last night and they work well at lighting up the walkway that'll eventually be put down. There's way too many settings on the remote but it's easy to figure out.
It rained pretty hard last night and still is so they really are waterproof
Here's an early morning pic.

micholo2 did you cut yours? I want to put mine under my awning and mine is about 14' 8" and these are longer. Do you know if you can cut them? The same seller sells them in kits with remotes and control boxes. I emailed the seller just wanting to know.
Thanks Again

If the LED strips are the same as the ones in B&T's thread: http://www.ebay.com/itm/5M-72W-12V-I...item20da7737a5 they do have the "cut here" tan color markings every 3 LED's. That being said, if the LED strip is encased in a flexible plastic with end caps to seal the plastic (and it looks like it is) then cutting the strip may destroy the end cap seal and cause the strip to leak. If the cap can be removed and reinstalled at the place you cut, I'd think it would maintain the waterproof feature. But to answer your question, yes the strip can be cut at any of the tan markings on the LED strip. You may have to resolder the wiring loom from the cut end to maintain the color changing feature. The connections are clearly marked, +12VDC, G, R, B.

I cut about 2' off of mine. I filled the end cap(it came off fairly easy) with silicon and squished it on the cut end and wiped off the excess. No problems yet, and it has rained on it numerous times in the past couple of months.

I just received my 16ft strip of all white ones... found them on ebay for..and get this....$5.94 including shipping! I figured for $6 it couldn't hurt to try them and they work great. Exactly the same strip I was going to buy at the RV show for $51. I ran them through a clear plastic tube, wired them up to 12 volt accessory plug and they work great. Only downside was 3 weeks shipping.

Trailer life has a good article on LED lighting options in the current (April) issue. It's on page 48. Also, and more in line with this thread, there is another article on page 60 that deals with installing the Dometic LED awning strip light. MSRP is $199.99. That's the same type of light (unsure if it's the same "brand" made in the same Chinese factory) that's available on EBay for $16. But with Camping World, if it's in stock, there's no 3 week shipping delay. There's something to be said about "instant gratification" being expensive LOL

LED strip light

I have been looking at the LED light strips idea for some time and finally have gotten to it.
I found a 16-foot strip on eBay for $4.01 and used a switch that I had out in the barn. I took my 12-volt electrical from a light in the basement storage area and ran it up to the cabinet in the living room area. The cabinet is a hutch unit with tinted glass. Even with the glass doors the inside of it was dark and hard to organize. The strip I used worked nicely using the 18-inch extra length in the cabinet below the hutch.
My total cost was approximately $8.00.

I am going to tape my lights up under the awning, except that the wire which runs into the power pack is up there. Any suggestions on what to do with it during travel? I read about some of this wiring directly but I am not an expert by any means and dont want to wreck anything.
