Chucking advise
Hello,
We just bought a new Fuzion 381. I took it out this weekend for a shake down run and I am getting some trailer chucking (for and aft). This is my first fifth wheel. My TV is a 2011 3500 Dodge dully 8' bed 6.7 W/ 800 FPT package. My Hitch is a B&W 18K companion I have my hitch adjusted at the proper height (6 inches) above the bed top. What I am wondering is; where is the ideal position for the king pin ( front-back.) I have the hitch adjusted now so the king pin is above the rear axel now. I still have some adjustment towards the cab and from what I have been reading I think I should move it forward a bit. Am I correct in my assumption?

Can't help you any with the positioning of the pin, but as far as I know, chucking is common among all or most 5vers. The only fix I know of is to put an air ride kingpin on your unit. Several different companies make them, and some claim they help quite a bit. Do a forum search for chucking or air ride hitches.

I was always under the impression that the center of the hitch should be 2" in front of the axle. The instructions for the hitch should tell you where that hitch should be. With a TH you may experience different rides with garage empty or full. Good luck and travel safely, Hank ......... On certain road conditions chucking is almost impossible to stop completely.

Hank is correct on the 2" in front of the Axel. When I was in the trailer business, we installed all hitches ahead of the Axel therefore transferring a little more weight to the front end, but we where also pulling horse trailers which of course the axles are further back than a recreational vehicle but one would think that it would be the same for these trailers. Also Hanks statement of what you are hauling will depend on the way it pulls. We have a Moryde hitch on our Montana and I think it works great, but of course pulling with the Freightliner it is a little hard to tell if I get chucking or not....

Just my opinion, but nothing except very, very minor chucking should be a problem. As in pull trailers, my first thought would be pin weight. If the fiver is level (that is critical. Forget 6" above the truck rails, is it level?) and there is enough pin weight, there should not be any significant chucking. If the trailer is riding nose up, no matter the distance above the rails, then you may get chucking. So: fiver level, adequate pin weight, proper placement of hitch: no chucking.

2"-3" forward of the rear axle is a good distance for your pin. I'd first look at "too light of pin weight" for you chucking issues. (assuming your truck and RV are level).

Thanks for the advise
After reading your advise I looked at all the mentioned variables. My trailer is very level no noseing up. I think it is the pin position as it is too far back (just a tad behind the rear axel). I measured and can adjust it safely 2"-4" toward the cab. I also called B&W today and they advised me to move the hitch forward too.
