Angry Wiring problem

I have a 2006 Hornet. I replaced the fan in the bathroom with a MaxxAir. When I repowered the electrical system, MaxxAir did not work. In the fuse box a red light indicating fuse blown was on and all lights on the circuit were dead. Replacing the fuse did not help and testing the fuse showed it to be good. Disconnecting the fan had no effect. Any suggestions as to what I did wrong and how to fix it??

Iflyfish -

Sounds like you wired up a dead short. Get back into the wiring and disconnect everything you did. If you want to test, put a wrap of electricians tape around the wire ends and then replace the fuse. Bet it won't blow. Wire designations/colors on 12VDC is a little different, and I have even found one area in my Alpine where the 12VDC wiring is color reversed! My advice would be to check everything with a voltmeter (multimeter) and reconnecting the wires per the instructions (using the voltmeter readings rather than color).

Saabdoctor is absolutely correct! How did you check the fuse? If you used an ohmmeter (multimeter) and it checked good, then you might have fried a wire (power lead) from the fuse box to the lights/fan. That could be painful! But if the fuse only "looks good", it might actually be bad with just a hairline break.

Let us know what you find! If you did fry a power lead (distribution line from the fuse box to the lights/fan), it will probably be a melted wire and insulation behind the fuse box or maybe at a bend. Hopefully it will not be in the ceiling! Fuses are safeguards, but sometimes they do not "work" fast enough.

Ron
They always work fine unless they have been replaced by someone who thinks bigger is better.

Problem solved

Turns out the fuse was good. The circuit board was burned out. Fortunately there was a spare circuit on the board that I was able to use. Must have had a short in the original installation and the fuse failed to blow allowing the wiring for that circuit to self destruct in the board.

The MaxxAir is a two wire hook up. I hope you used an inline fuse and did not rely on the fuse in the panel. (As per instructions) MaxxAir has very good customer service and will most likely send you a new circuit-board under warranty. They did it for me after a year when my board got wet and fried. Great people to talk to and got the new board in three days. JM2¢, Hank

Here is a photo I used to question the upgraded board they sent .... they answered right away that it was compatible.
