Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

I have a question for 5th wheel people. With the track right now to be real close to where I live, we could see hurricane force winds. My 5th wheel is parked in my driveway. Do I hook it up to my truck for extra safety, or will it be okay with the Lippert jacks down and bal x-chocks?

Re: Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

wooby99, Howdy;

Well, ... the Governor of South Carolina recommend that ALL of the residents
that live near the coast move at least 100 miles inland. Now I know that you
are quite a bit further North, but the Eastern Shore of Md. doesn't do well
during storms like this one. Pay attention to the forecasts and remember
how far you are from the US-50 bridge and that there will be other traffic
heading that direction if it starts to look bad for the E.S.
Should you decide to go on a short "vacation", unplug all of your electronics
and either take them with you or move them upstairs, if you have an upstairs
and put them in double plastic bags to keep other moisture out.
Better Safe then Sorry .....

Re: Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

Wooby99,
You may want to consider moving it to higher ground and if possible clear of any trees with the back to the prevailing winds. Unfortunately my TT is stuck at a dealership for service. The last time I picked it up the tires and jack were covered in mud. I hate to think what it might be like after Matthew.

Seriously, hook it up to your truck, raise the jacks, remove the chocks and get it the hell out of town.

Re: Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

5th wheels are just smaller mobile homes. I would pack it up with as many keepsakes as possible and make reservations at a good sam RV park.

Re: Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

I agree with the above advise.

If you can't get into a campground out of harms way, find a Wal-Mart about 100 miles from the expected storm path, and boondock it.

That way, both you and the 5er are safe!

Good Luck,

Re: Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

TODAY would be a good day to follow the above advice, fill everything with fuel and move the beast to Bumble Bee RV resort in Accident, MD. I might add there are also a number of nice RV parks in the area. These are nice people and your unit will be safe until Matthew heads out to sea. I don't much care for the "wait and see" where storms are concerned.

Re: Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

Whatever you do, you have to make your decisions early. Waiting until the last couple days only puts you into a traffic jam and youll be sitting on the road when the storm hits.

I definitely agree with this !!! In 2005, during Hurricane Rita, interstate 45 (and all other roads north) out of Houston became a "ghost town" of abandoned cars that ran out of gas "parked" on the highway in the traffic jam of people leaving Houston. What little fuel was available at the very few service stations that were open, had lines backed up for miles, which made it impossible to refuel, even if they were open. Most of them had closed and headed north the day before.

So, load up, fuel up and head inland ASAP. Waiting to the last minute to make a decision will only put you in the "traffic jam on the escape route"......

Re: Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

Hi, Thanks for all the advise. Luckily Matthew is gonna make a right turn and head out into the Atlantic before it gets this far north. I am still going to keep a close eye on the weather reports. Rich

I was at Bumble Bee this spring. What other CGs were you saying are "in the area"?

Re: Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

It is not supposed to turn until it gets past here ~~ backed it up to a secure building, hit auto-level and will see how it goes. Forecast changed from 110 - 120 mph winds to 70 - 90 gusts so the decision was made to stay home for this one.

Re: Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

Tom, the only one that comes to mind immediately is GG camp ground, but we have never stayed there. I'm sure there are others in an area that large. Mainly I remember how good the food was at Annie's Country Kitchen and how bad the pizza was at Brenda's Pizzeria in town.

Re: Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

This reminds me of needing to go knock on doors to tell people to get out before the flooding river or storm hits. I did it 2 times. Some people just cannot or will not decide to leave. The worse one was we were telling folks to get out before the mountain side of mud started. A co worker was telling a older couple to get out now. They would not. As he was standing on the porch it let loose, sounding like a train at high speed and still a mile or more away. They all than ran to his OSP pickup. As they drove away the road had a few inchs of mud crossing it. The next day the mud was up to the house roof and house was knocked off the foundation. He did save their lives and nearby lost his if he waited any longer.

Re: Hurricane Matthew 5th Wheel Preparation

Been there done that. Be prepped to leave early. Think about what the news media is saying and what 90% of people will do. Think contrarian. Leave at 2am. It will still be a nightmare. Look for backroads that others will not use.
Have a SHTF bug out bag with important papers. Five gallons of fuel for the tow vehicle. Get out of Dodge. Sooner the better.
