Hitch storage

Where do you all store your hitch when you’re not using it? My Equalizer hitch is big, heavy, awkward, and greasy. I’ve been storing it in my passthrough compartment, but I don’t like having it there or lugging it in and out of there.

I could leave it in my garage when I’m home, but I think it should stay with the trailer. And when camping, I don’t want to leave it in the receiver because someone might bump into it and get greasy and/or scraped and bruised.

Unless I am camping, going to the home imporvement store or going to the dump, I don't drive my truck. So it stays in place.

sdayman, Howdy;

Why is; " My Equalizer hitch is big, heavy, awkward, and greasy."

I understand the big and heavy. With my previous RV (a TT), I had an
Equilizer. Mine was never greasey (well the ball may have a thin film of
White Lithium grease).
I found that by applying a few drops of Liquid soap to the "L" brackets and the
bottom of the bar where it goes into the socket, all was quiet and never collected grime nor grit.
Run thru a puddle and the soap helps clean the parts.
I used the sopa on frame rails when I had to slide the axels on a trailer when I drove OTR.
and a few other applications. Made things slippery, and stayed clean.

My hitch stays in the truck until the camping season is over usually around late Oct. The hitch is than removed covered and stored in the garage until next spring.
I use a hoist to remove mine and then placed the hitch on a roll around dolly that I built to store my hitch on.

hankaye, it’s the ball that’s greasy. I could put a cap on it, but it’d still be big, awkward, and heavy.

When home my Equal-i-zer draw bar sits on a shelf where it can be slid on and off using my floor jack. I built a wooden box frame to hold it on the jack, works great. I sure can't lift it.

When RVing it stays in the TV receiver. After you hit it two or three times it will no longer be an issue. Haven't hit mine in over 20 years now.

Howdy All;

, I kept mine on the back of the truck when not towing.
chuck&gailIs right, after dang near breaking my leg once or twice
(slow learner), I learned to move w i d e around the back of the truck.

I never had to use anything but my hands and arms to mount or un mount it when I did need to remove it. Only weighed , maybe 30 or so lbs.....
Mine was one of the older/earlier versions, set it where ya want it then weild it in place.
One of the guys at the factory in Provo, wanted me to donate it to them for
historical use ???Wanted me to buy the replacement. Told him I swap even-Steven... never heard back

hankaye

PS. As a fulltimer I don't have a garage...

PS. A few squirts of windex and a few paper towels and it was clean...or you could spray it off at the car wash...

I’m starting to think I just store it in the garage and then leave it on the truck when camping. But I’m a neat freak and have the urge to put stuff away when not in use.

So I’m fine with leaving it in the garage when we’re not camping, but I’d sure like a good place to store it while camping. Maybe I can find a bolt-on receiver to mount under the tongue.

I have a airsafe air hitch. that thing is HEAVY, north of 100lbs. When I'm not going to use the trailer for a few weeks, it goes onto a small HF carpeted dolly that I bought and added some scrap lumber to make a nice saddle for it to fit into so I can roll it around.

When camping it stays on the truck, usually makes a nice conversation piece as folks see it and ask what the heck is that thing??

and since it is secured to the truck with a locking hitch pin it isn't going to disapear easily. No desire to remove it when camping, to heavy, don't want to find a way to lock it up.

And it's big enough and scary enough that folks don't seem to want to tailgate me when I'm driving w/o the trailer.

Ok, it seems that leaving it on the truck while camping makes the most sense. I’ll just have to make sure it’s decently clean. My 3 year old has already bumped the dirty trailer tongue a time or two.

And I’ll leave it in the garage when not camping. I’m just paranoid that we’ll pack up and go to storage only to realize that I’ve left the hitch at home. I’m sure that would be the first and last time that’ll ever happen.

In the garage when stored along with the Eq bars ....on the truck when camping with a big ole orange traffic cone on it at the site. Truly not that difficult folks. However if it is that difficult just put the tail gate down as aforementioned. Tow trailer = dents on the shins. 5th wheel = dent on the head. Just mark it, flag it to avoid it. Guess that's why we carry first aid kits. OUCH.

When I had my dual cam and now the Hensley I remove the hitch bar and lay it on the trailer tongue next to the battery. At home it's in the garage. By the way....some states have a law about leaving the hitch installed while traveling. I didn't know this untill a friend of mine whom is a policeman told me about it. Now weather or not any officers were crazy enough to enforce it I don't know.

When I had a TT I keep the bars in a rifle case and the head unit in a heavy duty bucket when at home and when out camping the head unit stayed in the truck and bars in the rifle case.

We Have A ProPride so the bars always stay on the trailer but the hitch head is an issue as it is with any hitch. After wrestling it in and out of the storage compartment a few times, I tried leaving it on the truck, that wasn't a good solution either. I mounted a receiver in the vertical position on the side of the trailer tongue now I just mount the hitch head in that receiver and use a locking hitch pin anytime we are not pulling the trailer.
